Libro de tonos humanos es un cancionero poético musical más importante del siglo XVII tanto por la calidad de sus composiciones como por la cantidad de las mismas. Compilado por Diego Pizarro, entre 1655 y 1656, contiene más de doscientas obras compuestas mayoritariamente para cuatro voces. Tonos a lo humano y a lo divino, piezas teatrales y villancicos religiosos de Juan Hidalgo de Polanco (1614-1685), compositor de capital relevancia para nuestra historia musical. Arpista de la Real Capilla y músico teatral por excelencia del siglo XVII, Hidalgo puso música a numerosos textos de Calderón de la Barca y de otros dramaturgos de su escuela, fue un inspirado compositor en el género aristocrático del tono humano, sobresalió también como autor de música para villancicos y alcanzó las cotas más elevadas de expresividad y sensibilidad en su intento de plasmar en música el dictado alegórico de la poesía. Era el músico de la corte por excelencia y gozaba de los mayores y mejores privilegios a los que un compositor del Antiguo Régimen podía aspirar. Conocemos al Hidalgo melodista, que se desenvuelve con gran maestría en el arte de la composición para voz sola, y al Hidalgo operista, que se muestra sutil y experto en enfatizar musicalmente la acción dramática a través de solos, recitados, dúos y pasajes a cuatro voces, estos últimos casi siempre en homofonía para facilitar la inteligibilidad del texto. Pero quizá no conozcamos tanto al Hidalgo polifonista y contrapuntista, al Hidalgo que maneja las voces imitativamente en los villancicos polifónicos y que supera, con una mayor exposición de recursos expresivos, el legado de los maestros que le precedieron. Por su vinculación a la Real Capilla, Hidalgo compuso también gran cantidad de villancicos de los que se han seleccionado algunos para formar parte de este volumen junto a tonos teatrales y a lo humano y tonos a lo divino.
