Rapid and uneven change to the fabric of rural life is widespread in modern Middle Eastern countries. Modernisation, usually in the Western model, has often brought major improvements in agricultural technology, education and public health but has also had the effect of weakening the traditional rural economy of many villages and encouraging their growing dependence on external sources of income, most notably oil remittances. This collection of research on the Middle Eastern village looks at the impact on rural life and environment of such factors as the mass exodus of labour to urban centres, emigration, immigration, environmental change and the changing role of women in rural communities – particularly the wives of migrant workers who have to fill a new role in the family structure. State-sponsored agrarian policies have weakened the power of traditional landed interests and together with labour migration have provoked new tension and inequalities in rural society. The book makes clear that the pattern of change has been highly uneven and has served to heterogenise the countryside. As the oil states enter a period of recession and the likelihood of substantial return migration increases, rural communities will need to make further major adjustments and the book examines the tensions this new development is likely to produce. First published in 1987.

Ecopolis written by Paul F. Downton and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-19 with Science categories.

From 2008, for the first time in human history, half of the world’s population now live in cities. Yet despite a wealth of literature on green architecture and planning, there is to date no single book which draws together theory from the full range of disciplines - from architecture, planning and ecology - which we must come to grips with if we are to design future cities which are genuinely sustainable. Paul Downton’s Ecopolis takes a major step along this path. It highlights the urgent need to understand the role of cities as both agents of change and means of survival, at a time when climate change has finally grabbed world attention, and it provides a framework for designing cities that integrates knowledge - both academic and practical - from a range of relevant disciplines. Identifying key theorists, practitioners, places and philosophies, the book provides a solid theoretical context which introduces the concept of urban fractals, and goes on to present a series of design and planning tools for achieving Sustainable Human Ecological Development (SHED). Combining knowledge from diverse fields to present a synthesis of urban ecology, the book will provide a valuable resource for students, researchers and practitioners in architecture, construction, planning, geography and the traditional life sciences.

It is known as 'the people's bank', 'the community bank' or simply 'the Bendigo'. As BUILDING THE VILLAGE shows, the Bendigo Bank's sense of social responsibility stretches back to 1858 and its roots on the Bendigo goldfield. Today, 150 years later, the bank's future rests upon the close community relationships it has built up across Australia. Historian Alan Mayne tells the story of the bank's developments, which parallel the building of Australia into one prosperous nation, and required overcoming many hurdles along the way, such as the protracted Federation drought, world wars, and the financial turmoil of the early 1990s.

Historical Dictionary Of Sydney written by Arthur Emerson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with History categories.

Sydney has for much of its history been regarded as a relative backwater. Australia was far removed from the center of the British Empire and the British Commonwealth. It was considered peripheral by Europe and by the United States, and somewhat of an anomaly by Asia. Recently this has all changed. Australia has become increasingly culturally and commercially oriented toward Asia and the 2000 Sydney Olympics has thrust the city into the international spotlight. This historical dictionary is not a guide book, but it provides an overall view of the city, its history, its culture, and it's people. There are historical and current sketches of major areas and geographic features and an overview of notable institutions and architectural works. The chronology is an excellent reference and overview. It also includes a broad and wide-ranging bibliography of literature.
