The polyphonic world poem Galáxias (1984) by Brazilian poet Haroldo de Campos has, to date, mainly been discussed in the broader context of concrete poetry and the Latin American neo-baroque. In this book, Jasmin Wrobel offers a completely new reading of the work as a poetic testimony to a century of catastrophes: references to traumatic historical events are embedded as ‘stumbling blocks’ in the textual architecture, guiding the reader towards a ‘Poetics of Stumbling’.

This collection of essays explores the hotel as a site of modernity, a space of mobility and transience that shaped the transnational and transcultural modernist activity of the first half of the twentieth century. As a trope for social and cultural mobility, transitory and precarious modes of living, and experiences of personal and political transformation, the hotel space in modernist writing complicates binaries such as public and private, risk and rootedness, and convention and experimentation. It is also a prime location for modernist production and the cross-fertilization of heterogeneous, inter- and trans- literary, cultural, national, and affective modes. The study of the hotel in the work of authors such as E. M. Forster, Katherine Mansfield, Kay Boyle, and Joseph Roth reveals the ways in which the hotel nuances the notions of mobilities, networks, and communities in terms of gender, nation, and class. Whereas Mary Butts, Djuna Barnes, Anaïs Nin, and Denton Welch negotiate affective and bodily states which arise from the alienation experienced at liminal hotel spaces and which lead to new poetics of space, Vicki Baum, Georg Lukács, James Joyce, and Elizabeth Bishop explore the socio-political and cultural conflicts which are manifested in and by the hotel. This volume invites us to think of “hotel modernisms” as situated in or enabled by this dynamic space. Das Ziel der Studie ist eine Neulektüre von Haroldo de Campos’ polyphonem Weltgedicht Galáxias (1984), das bisher vor allem im Kontext der konkreten Poesie und des lateinamerikanischen Neobarock besprochen wurde. Jasmin Wrobel zeigt, dass das Werk vielmehr als poetisches Zeitzeugnis des Jahrhunderts der Katastrophen zu lesen ist: die Referenzen auf traumatische historische Ereignisse – insbesondere auf die Shoah und den europäischen Faschismus – verankern sich als ‹Stolpersteine› in der Textarchitektur der Galáxias, eine Konzept-Metapher, die in der Untersuchung in erster Linie von Gunter Demnigs Mahnmal-Projekt hergeleitet wird. In der Analyse wird erörtert, wie diese ‹textuellen Stolpersteine› zu Momenten des Innehaltens und Verstehens an der hermetischen, neobarocken Textoberfläche führen und wie sie sich zu einer ‹Poetik des Stolperns› fügen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch die Bedeutung von Haroldo de Campos’ Europareisen 1959 und 1964 aufgezeigt, die sich als interpretatorische Schlüsselrouten für das Werk erweisen. Die Begegnung mit dem US-amerikanischen Dichter Ezra Pound 1959 wird hierbei als eigener ‹Stolperstein› auf de Campos’ Weg zu den Galáxias identifiziert.

In der Praktischen Theologie wird die Forschung zur materialen Kultur, die in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften längst etabliert ist, bislang nur sehr zögerlich mitvollzogen. Die stillschweigende Exkommunikation der Dinge aus dem praktisch-theologischen Diskurs überrascht, aber sie hat natürlich Gründe und eine lange Geschichte. Die in den Sach-Verhalten ruhenden Vermittlungsleistungen, ihre eigenlogische Gravität und ihre Widerspenstigkeit wecken im Kontext der kirchlichen Religionskultur aufgrund ihrer Vertrautheit und pastoralen Alltäglichkeit kaum die theologische Neugier. Die epistemische Wahrnehmung der materiellen Umwelt, und hier insbesondere die Neuvermessung des Verhältnisses von Subjekt und Objekt, von Bedeutungszuschreibungen und -verweigerungen, von Aktivität und Passivität, beschreibt im Blick auf Sach-Verhalte einen Theoriezugriff, der die Sicht auf kasuelle Vollzüge durchaus zu ergänzen bzw. zu korrigieren vermag: Kasualien beruhen auf rituell konstitutiven Kontaktnahmen mit Dingen (Erdwurf, Brautringe, Urkunden, Taufkleid etc.). Wenn diese Dinge auch "handeln" bzw. mithandeln können - so die These -, dann sind die handelnden Subjekte auf eine Instanz verwiesen, die nicht vollends unter ihrer Kontrolle ist.
