Der Band verfolgt drei Zielsetzungen. In einem ersten Schritt werden theoretische und methodische Überlegungen sowie Forschungsergebnisse aus Geschichtswissenschaft, Soziologie und Sprachwissenschaft dargestellt, die die sprachliche Konstitution der Realität in historischen Prozessen in den Mittelpunkt stellen. Damit wird eine Verortung diskursgeschichtlich orientierter sprachwissenschaftlicher Ansätze in einen interdisziplinären Zusammenhang geleistet, der von der germanistischen Sprachgeschichtsschreibung noch kaum zur Kenntnis genommen worden ist. Im zweiten Schritt wird ein eigener methodischer Ansatz begründet, der in der Lage ist, die vielfach geforderte, aber selten praktizierte "tiefensemantische" Analyse von Diskursen zu ermöglichen. Dafür eignet sich der argumentationstheoretisch fundierte Topos-Begriff. Dessen Verwendung in verschiedenen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen wird erörtert, um so eine geeignete Kategorie zu begründen, mit der kontextspezifische Argumentationsmuster eruiert werden können. Im dritten Teil werden die zuvor erarbeiteten Möglichkeiten einer diskursgeschichtlichen Analyse empirisch umgesetzt: Die Fruchtbarkeit der Methode wird anhand der Geschichte der Diskussionen um die Arbeitsmigration in die Bundesrepublik aufgezeigt. Es werden Kontinuitäten und Veränderungen des öffentlich geäußerten Denkens, Fühlens und Wollens zu diesem Themenbereich ermittelt und somit wird ein Beitrag zur Mentalitätsgeschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland geleistet.

Metaphors of Confinement: The Prison in Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy offers a historical survey of imaginings of the prison as expressed in carceral metaphors in a range of texts about imprisonment from Antiquity to the present as well as non-penal situations described as confining or restrictive. These imaginings coalesce into a 'carceral imaginary' that determines the way we think about prisons, just as social debates about punishment and criminals feed into the way carceral imaginary develops over time. Examining not only English-language prose fiction but also poetry and drama from the Middle Ages to postcolonial, particularly African, literature, the book juxtaposes literary and non-literary contexts and contrasts fictional and nonfictional representations of (im)prison(ment) and discussions about the prison as institution and experiential reality. It comments on present-day trends of punitivity and foregrounds the ethical dimensions of penal punishment. The main argument concerns the continuity of carceral metaphors through the centuries despite historical developments that included major shifts in policy (such as the invention of the penitentiary). The study looks at selected carceral metaphors, often from two complementary perspectives, such as the home as prison or the prison as home, or the factory as prison and the prison as factory. The case studies present particularly relevant genres and texts that employ these metaphors, often from a historical perspective that analyses development through different periods.

Although recent linguistic and media-studies' research has increasingly dealt with forms of imagery beyond language, such as in audiovisual formats, only little attention has been paid to the specific media character of audiovisual images. This raises a theoretical as well as methodological problem: How can processes of figurative meaning making in audiovisual media be adequately conceptualized and described? The book intends to bridge this research gap with an analysis of campaign commercials, a hitherto largely underexplored object of study in metaphor and metonymy research. To achieve this goal, a transdisciplinary film-analytical and cognitive-linguistic account of audiovisual figurativity is developed and examined through a comparative analysis of figurative meaning-making processes in German and Polish campaign commercials from 2009 and 2011. By setting the inseparable intertwining of language and cinematic staging, sensing and understanding center stage, the book provides insight into the dynamic nature and embodied affective grounds of audiovisual figurativity, and challenges the long-known dichotomies of rational discourse and affective manipulation, political message and media effect.

Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt eine theoretische und methodische Auseinandersetzung mit der Diskurslinguistik sowie eine empirische Umsetzung dar. Diskurslinguistik im Anschluss an Foucault befasst sich mit textübergreifenden, sprachlichen Wirklichkeitskonstitutionsprozessen, die zugleich als kulturell und weltanschaulich bedingtes Wissen aufzufassen sind. Diskurslinguistik wird handlungstheoretisch fundiert und darauf aufbauend ein Mehrebenendiskursanalysemodell als methodisches Verfahren entwickelt, das sprachstrukturelle, semantische, funktionale sowie situativ-kontextuelle Analysedimensionen umfasst. Am Beispiel des öffentlich-politischen Bioethikdiskurses um Stammzellforschung wird gezeigt, wie Schlüsselwörter, Metaphern und Argumentationstopoi in den je eigenen weltanschaulichen Argumentationskontext gestellt und semantisch fixiert werden, was zu einer perspektivierten Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit führt. Kulturelle und weltanschauliche Voraussetzungen manifestieren sich dementsprechend immer schon in diskurstypischen Sprachgebräuchen, die als semantische Grundfiguren das diskursrelevante Hintergrundwissen bilden.

The pictorial turn in the humanities and social sciences has foregrounded the political power of images and the extent to which historical, political, social, and cultural processes and practices are shaped visually. Political iconographies are taken to interpret norms of actions, support ideological formations, and enhance moral concepts. Visual rhetorics are understood as active players in the construction and contestation of the political realm and public space. Far from being rhetorical ornaments, metaphors play a central role in public discourse, as they shape the structure of political categorisation and argumentation. Drawing on a very large bilingual corpus, this book, now in paperback, analyses the distribution of 'metaphor scenarios' in more than a decade of public discourse on European integration, elucidating differences in UK and German attitudes and argumentation. The corpus analysis leads to a refinement of cognitive metaphor theory by systematically relating conceptual, semantic and argumentation levels and incorporating the historical dimension of metaphor evolution. Finally, drawing on examples of metaphor negotiation and on a reassessment of Hobbes' concept of metaphor in Leviathan, the book highlights the ethical dimension of metaphor in politics.
