“Like any classic, the Torah appears in different guises with each rereading. Its infinite layers of meaning and depth offer the opportunity to harvest anew, without any fear of exhausting its supply of wisdom, counsel, and kedushah (holiness). To encounter Torah is to encounter God.” --from the Introduction In this inspiring collection, Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson illuminates the sacred text at the heart of Jewish spirituality. Enlightening and original, The Everyday Torah brings the ancient text to life with poignant reflections that will guide to you to a deeper understanding of the Torah, of Judaism, of yourself. "Torah goes its weekly way, and we go ours, and do the two paths ever cross? They cross often in many minds and hearts, but when it is Bradley Shavit Artson who provides their point of intersection, the crossroads widens into a town square." --Jack Miles, author of God: A Biography "Every page is a joy to read. Many, many readers will treasure this book." --Richard Elliott Friedman, author of Commentary on the Torah and Who Wrote the Bible? "Rabbi Bradley Artson remains one of the most inviting of modern day teachers of Torah. This book will offer needed guidance and inspiration to all who turn its pages." --Rabbi David Ellenson, Ph.D., president of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion

What is the relevance of the weekly Shabbat Torah reading to our every-day 'modern' lives? Using his own true life experiences, the author reveals how we can uncover the miracles that occur to each of us daily, if only we would understand the messages that the Torah readings bring to our lives. Many of these anecdotal stories can be used by rabbis, educators and laymen across the entire Jewish spectrum to highlight the relevance of the Torah to the modern experience.

Levinas And The Torah written by Richard I. Sugarman and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-23 with Religion categories.

The French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1906–95) was one of the most original Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. This book interprets the Hebrew Bible through the lens of Levinas's religious philosophy. Richard I. Sugarman examines the Pentateuch using a phenomenological approach, drawing on both Levinas's philosophical and Jewish writings. Sugarman puts Levinas in conversation with biblical commentators both classical and modern, including Rashi, Maimonides, Sforno, Hirsch, and Soloveitchik. He particularly highlights Levinas's work on the Talmud and the Holocaust. Levinas's reading is situated against the background of a renewed understanding of such phenomena as covenant, promise, different modalities of time, and justice. The volume is organized to reflect the fifty-four portions of the Torah read during the Jewish liturgical year. A preface provides an overview of Levinas's life, approach, and place in contemporary Jewish thought. The reader emerges with a deeper understanding of both the Torah and the philosophy of a key Jewish thinker.

The groundbreaking volume The Torah: A Women's Commentary, originally published by URJ Press and Women of Reform Judaism, has been awarded the top prize in the oldest Jewish literary award program, the 2008 National Jewish Book Awards. A work of great import, the volume is the result of 14 years of planning, research, and fundraising. THE HISTORY: At the 39th Women of Reform Judaism Assembly in San Francisco, Cantor Sarah Sager challenged Women of Reform Judaism delegates to "imagine women feeling permitted, for the first time, feeling able, feeling legitimate in their study of Torah." WRJ accepted that challenge. The Torah: A Women's Commentary was introduced at the Union for Reform Judaism 69th Biennial Convention in San Diego in December 2007. WRJ has commissioned the work of the world's leading Jewish female Bible scholars, rabbis, historians, philosophers and archaeologists. Their collective efforts resulted in the first comprehensive commentary, authored only by women, on the Five Books of Moses, including individual Torah portions as well as the Hebrew and English translation. The Torah: A Women's Commentary gives dimension to the women's voices in our tradition. Under the skillful leadership of editors Dr. Tamara Cohn Eskenazi and Rabbi Andrea Weiss, PhD, this commentary provides insight and inspiration for all who study Torah: men and women, Jew and non-Jew. As Dr. Eskenazi has eloquently stated, "we want to bring the women of the Torah from the shadow into the limelight, from their silences into speech, from the margins to which they have often been relegated to the center of the page - for their sake, for our sake and for our children's sake."

A renowned rabbi gathers writings-from around the world, across traditions, and through time--to illuminate the themes of the Old Testament Creation, freedom, conflict and reconciliation, community and justice, dreams, courage, family, marriage, love . . . these are the themes of the Torah, and Day by Day sheds light on them with words by thinkers and writers from an extraordinary range of times and traditions. Written and compiled by a beloved rabbi whose prayerbooks are a mainstay of Reform Judaism, Day by Day takes us from Genesis to Deuteronomy, enlivening our understanding and enriching our spirit as it follows the weekly Torah readings held in synagogues every Sabbath throughout the year. Each chapter offers an excerpt from the week's Torah reading, Rabbi Stern's engaging explication of its main theme, and reflections to enlighten every day of the week. "What a wonderful book this is! A manual for living. . . . An amazing spring of what wisdom we have gained as people. . . . Drink from it now, a month from now, perhaps for as long as you live."--Howard Fast "This wise and gentle book will enable a new generation of Jews to live each week in the company of the Torah and in the company of those who respond to its themes." --Rabbi Jack Riemer, chair, National Rabbinic Network, coeditor of So That Your Values Live On and author of Jewish Insights on Death and Mourning
