Dit is een boek waarin een kleine honderd boeken worden voorgesteld door evenzovele wetenschappers, afkomstig uit binnen- en buitenland en gespecialiseerd in de meest uiteenlopende disciplines. Ze maken deel uit van de veel omvangrijker collectie van de Bibliotheca Thysiana, gevestigd te Leiden, die in 1653 bij testament werd gesticht door Johannes Thysius (1622-1653). Thysius was een telg uit een welgestelde, protestantse familie afkomstig uit de Zuidelijke Nederlanden, die aan het eind van de zestiende eeuw naar de Nederlandse Republiek was gevlucht. Tijdens zijn korte leven slaagde hij erin een imposante boekencollectie bijeen te brengen, waarin alle belangrijke wetenschapsgebieden van zijn tijd vertegenwoordigd waren. In zijn testament gaf Thysius aan dat er een speciaal pand moest worden gebouwd waarin zijn bibliotheek zou worden ondergebracht, zodat de boeken beschikbaar zouden zijn tot publijcque dienst der studie. In dat gebouw op de hoek van het Rapenburg en de Groenhazengracht, ontworpen door de Leidse stadsarchitect Arent van ’s-Gravesande, is de collectie nog altijd gehuisvest.

Diese Studie liefert die erste umfängliche Untersuchung der „Republiken“, den ersten und einflussreichsten frühneuzeitlichen Staatsbeschreibungen, die als Buchreihe publiziert wurden. Weiter verfolgt die Studie anhand dreier Fallstudien – der Republik der Niederlande, des spanischen Weltreichs sowie des safawidischen Persien – die Funktionen der Bände im Wissenschaftsbetrieb sowie die Text-, Ideen- und politischen Traditionen, in denen sie stehen. This book offers the first comprehensive study of the earliest and most notable early modern book series of state descriptions, the ‘Republics’. Printed in Leiden and Amsterdam in the 1620s and 1630s, the Republics evolved into foundational works of early modern political studies. By first tracing the volumes’ circulation and presence in book collections and libraries in the seventeenth century, this study provides fresh insights into their diverse readerships as well as their prominent role in the early modern book market. It then delves into their various academic purposes and their textual, intellectual, and political traditions through selected case studies on the Dutch Republic, the Spanish Empire, and Safavid Persia.

This volume examines the ten most popular fictional narratives in early modern Europe between 1470 and 1800. Each of these narratives was marketed in numerous European languages and circulated throughout several centuries. Combining literary studies and book history, this work offers for the first time a transnational perspective on a selected text corpus of this genre. It explores the spatio-temporal transmission of the texts in different languages and the materiality of the editions: the narratives were bought, sold, read, translated and adapted across European borders, from the south of Spain to Iceland and from Great Britain to Poland. Thus, the study analyses the multi-faceted processes of cultural circulation, translation and adaptation of the texts. In their diverse forms of mediality such as romance, drama, ballad and penny prints, they also make a significant contribution to a European identity in the early modern period. The narrative texts examined here include Apollonius, Septem sapientum, Amadis de Gaula, Fortunatus, Pierre de Provence et la belle Maguelonne, Melusine, Griseldis, Aesopus' Life and Fables, Reynaert de vos and Till Ulenspiegel.

State Communication and Public Politics in the Dutch Golden Age describes the political communication practices of the authorities in the early modern Netherlands. Der Weduwen provides an in-depth study of early modern state communication: the manner in which government sought to inform its citizens, publicise its laws, and engage publicly in quarrels with political opponents. These communication strategies, including proclamations, the use of town criers, and the printing and affixing of hundreds of thousands of edicts, underpinned the political stability of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Based on systematic research in thirty-two Dutch archives, this book demonstrates for the first time how the wealthiest, most literate, and most politically participatory state of early modern Europe was shaped by the communication of political information. It makes a decisive case for the importance of communication to the relationship between rulers and ruled, and the extent to which early modern authorities relied on the active consent of their subjects to legitimise their government.
