This book explores European security and defense R&D policy, unveiling the strategic, industrial, institutional and ideational sources of the European Commission’s military research initiative. Starting from a well-defined empirical epicentre—the rise of non-civilian R&D priorities in the European Union—this book covers interrelated themes and topics such as approaches to arms production and R&D collaboration relationships between European R&D-related institutions technology and research foundations of European security policy past and present European armament collaborations transatlantic R&D collaboration the militarization of border security. Divided into 5 sections, the enclosed chapters explore the EU technology and innovation policy in regards to security, industrial competitiveness and military capabilities. The terrorist attacks in the US on September 11, 2001 provided a window of opportunity for the introduction of security as a distinct European R&D priority. In fact, since 2002, the Preparatory Action for Security Research (PASR) has funded 45 million euros to 39 research consortia to conduct security R&D. While the idea of pooling defense research efforts and programmes in Europe is not new, the establishment of institutions like the European Defense Agency (EDA) are a major step into institutionalizing European agencies involvement in supporting defense technology research. It is against this backdrop of policy developments that this book is positioned, in addition to addressing some of the political, economic, industrial and philosophical questions that arise. Featuring contributions from a variety of academic fields and industries, this book will be of interest to scholars, researchers, students and policy makers in the fields of security policy, international relations, innovation, European studies and military studies.

The fifth -- and most explosive -- Nick Stone mission, by the internationally bestselling author whom Stephen Coonts has called the best suspense thriller writer to put pen to paper since Alistair MacLean. LIBERATION DAY November 2001. If he hadn't needed American citizenship so badly, Nick Stone wouldn't have agreed to do this one last job. But the CIA's offer of a new life in the United States, and the chance to share it with Carrie, the woman he loves, is one he can't refuse. Stone's mission is to infiltrate an Arab republic, kill a money-laundering local businessman, and bring back his severed head to the West. He doesn't know why the man has to die like this, nor does he want to know. Stone just assumes the job is related to the democratic world's response to the terrible attacks of September 11. But as events unfold alarmingly fast, Stone begins to realize the full danger and complexity of his mission which, far from being over, has only just begun. Then comes the devastating news that Carrie, enraged by his broken promise never to work again with the CIA, has turned her back on him forever. Operating in the dangerous underworld of the south of France, where al-Qaeda has embarked on a panicked roundup of funds using the centuries-old banking system of hawalla, Stone is in at the deep end of a very dirty war. In his most daunting mission yet, as one bloody twist leads to another, he ultimately finds himself confronted by the most desperate dilemma a man could face.

'Nick Stone is one of the great all-action characters of recent times' Daily Mirror Tough, resourceful, ruthless - as an SAS trooper, Nick Stone was one of the best. Now he's back on the streets. After a botched mission, the Regiment no longer want his services. But British Intelligence does - as a deniable operator. It's the dirtiest job in a very, very dirty world. In Washington DC, it's about to get dirtier still. On the apparently routine tail of two terrorists, he discovers the bodies of an ex-SAS officer and his family. Soon he's on the run with the lone survivor of the bloodbath - a seven year old girl. And whilst she can identify the killers, only Stone can keep them at bay - and solve a mystery whose genesis takes him back to the most notorious SAS mission in recent history... Remote Control is the first of Andy McNab's blistering Nick Stone thrillers - bestsellers whose landscape is so compellingly close to the truth that they had to be vetted by the Ministry of Defence, and could only be published as fiction... What readers are saying: ***** ‘Non-stop action and twists’ ***** ‘A thrilling journey that plays in your mind like a film.’ ***** ‘Fast-paced, edge of the seat thriller, written by someone who knows what he's talking about.’

Fourteen months after the Peace of Paris concluded the Crimean War (1853-1856), the British Army was faced with a crisis which would require an even greater commitment of force. Putting down the Indian Mutiny would require two years, over half the British Army, and thousands of East India Company and loyal locals. The EIC's forces' better and more experienced command structure and superior rifle-fire prevailed against the massed ranks of sepoys and their allies. The three major operations that were undertaken by the British are detailed, as is the dress, equipment and uniforms of the troops.

Prosecuting And Punishing Multi Offenders In The Eu written by Nele Audenaert and has been published by Gompel&Svacina this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-01 with Law categories.

This book elaborates on the rules governing the prosecution and sentencing of multi-offenders. The term ‘multi-offender’ is used for an offender that has committed a series of offences (either in one single act or in different acts); hence the addition of ‘multi’ in ‘multi-offender’. A crucial element thereto is that the whole series of offences – which make the offender a multi-offender – has been committed before being subject to a final conviction. A comparative EU-study was conducted, focussing on the rules governing multi-offenders within different EU Member States. It reveals that this type of offenders challenge both the legislator and the prosecution and judges: when the offences are prosecuted in one go, the challenges are linked to finding an appropriate way to assess the severity of the criminal behaviour; if however the offences are prosecuted in several simultaneous or consecutive proceedings, the challenges are linked to taking account of the simultaneous or past proceeding. These challenges only grow if proceedings take place in different EU Member States. The analysis presented in this book is essential reading for EU policy makers, national policy makers, academics and defence lawyers throughout the EU working with multi-offenders. Undoubtedly, it will be an asset to their work in both mere national as well as in cross-border cases.

The authors, including Cornel West, Angela Y. Davis, and Toni Morrison, argue that we have reached a crisis of democracy represented by an ominous shift toward a renewed white nationalism in which racism is operating in coded, quasi-respectable new forms.
