Human action is usually driven by the desire to obtain more for less, and, ideally something for nothing. This has sometimes been called the economic principle. The wish to “get free stuff” pervades all times and places, all sectors of the economy, all ages, and all social backgrounds. The very selfishness for which the market economy is often chided is, at bottom, a universal quest to obtain goods for free. Jörg Guido Hülsmann sets out to explore the boundaries of this endeavor. He investigates the nature, forms, causes, and consequences of gratuitous goods and concludes that they thrive within a free economy. But generosity and gratuitous abundance tend to be undermined and reversed by central banking and the welfare state. Dr Hülsmann is a professor of economics at the University of Angers in France. The myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt belongs to the great mythical cycles of the ancient world. P. Grossardt now offers the first complete presentation of all literary sources of the Calydonian hunt, as well as of other adventures of its central hero Meleagros. The sources have been arranged by genre and their literary context has been taken well into account. The author gives special attention to the development of different versions of the legend. Individual poets, Grossardt observes, used the myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt as a functional element in a larger context or in conscious contrast to older texts. In reconstructing the prehistory of the legend and its religious background, the author shows that the Calydonian boar-hunt myth originally had the function of an aition for the cult of Artemis Laphria and that it was taken up by the epic tradition long before Homer.

Defends the German Churches, in particular the Catholic Church, against accusations of passivity or collaboration with Nazism and the Holocaust. Until 1933, the Catholic Church and its political party, the Zentrum, were friendly toward Jews as well as militant opponents of Nazism. States that the Nazis saw in the Churches their greatest internal adversary; they persecuted them and planned to eliminate them after the war. Relates that many Catholics and other Germans aided Jews at risk of their lives, but martyrdom is not everyone's duty. The German bishops condemned the killing of human beings because of race or religion; the Pope aided Jews whenever he could do so discreetly. Contends that books that attack the Church and the Pope get published because they are popular and profitable, and that the Jews themselves are not free of guilt: during the Holocaust, Jewish councils collaborated with the Nazis; and Israel, in 1948 as well as later, has committed ethnic cleansing. Germans should stop self-mortification for crimes committed by an ideological clique and not by the people.
