Offering a window into the history of the modern legal profession in Western Europe, Stephen Jacobson presents a history of lawyers in the most industrialized city on the Mediterranean. Far from being mere curators of static law, Barcelona's lawyers were at the center of social conflict and political and economic change, mediating between state, family, and society. Beginning with the resurrection of a decadent bar during the Enlightenment, Jacobson traces the historical evolution of lawyers throughout the long nineteenth century. Among the issues he explores are the attributes of the modern legal profession, how lawyers engaged with the Enlightenment, how they molded events in the Age of Revolution and helped consolidate a liberal constitutional order, why a liberal profession became conservative and corporatist, and how lawyers promoted fin-de-siecle nationalism. Aquest llibre, d'antuvi, podria semblar un material de caire naturalista o excursionista, elaborat per un apassionat per la muntanya, el qual té com a eix principal la recerca i localització de fonts naturals a la regió nord-est de les Muntanyes de Prades. La impressió, sens dubte, és encertada, però això no ho és tot. Si us hi endinseu, hi trobareu una gran proliferació de topònims interessants i, alhora, hi copsareu la inquietud de l'autor que veu que, darrere el parany de la mundialització, s'hi amaga la pèrdua d'uns valors i una cultura que representen els noms propis que farcien el territori i que, com les fonts, si no tenim cura podem perdre pel camí. El problema de l'aigua a Montblanc, com en la majoria de poblacions mediterrànies, és endèmic. Si bé tenim notícia que a finals del segle xvii ja provocà algun maldecap, sabem que la vila trobà una solució elegant i sostenible al llarg dels segles xix i xx, quan es nodrí d'aigües de gran qualitat que procedien de fonts i pous de les muntanyes que l'envolten. Paradoxalment, fou enmig dels debats sobre la sostenibilitat i una nova cultura de l'aigua quan Montblanc perdé aquell milió de litres d'aigua que podia obtenir i passà a dependre quasi exclusivament de l'aigua de l'Ebre.
