Context-aware systems can dynamically adapt to user situations to provide smarter services. In general, context refers to the information that can be used to characterize these situations, and context models are deployed to specify contextual information described in context-aware systems. However, even though user context is highly dynamic, existing context models either focus on modeling static views of context or lack appropriate design abstractions to deal with dynamic aspects and interactions involving contextual elements such as location, time, user roles, social relationships, and changing preferences. Moreover, virtual environments have not been modelled by most of the existing context models even though online interaction is very common and popular. This thesis presents a dynamic user-centric context model that can be used to model the aspects of context-aware systems that are subject to frequent change.

Many exciting and promising application areas of mobile context-aware computing have emerged in recent years, such as tourist guides and navigation systems for visually impaired people. However, many researchers express grave concerns about the limited appreciation of human and social issues in design: usability issues remain unresolved particularly relating to mobile computer settings, and existing user-centred design approaches/frameworks are still in their infancy. This thesis proposes a framework to advance user-centred approaches to designing context-aware systems in order to help application developers (i) build richer descriptions or scenarios of mobile computer settings, and (ii) identify key human and social issues affecting the usability of their context-aware system. After a critical review of literature, a multidisciplinary model of context was developed in order to bring together theories, and proposed models, of context in Psychology, Linguistics, and Computer Science. This invaluable exercise illustrated the implications those theories have for context-aware computing. Three key perspectives of the multidisciplinary model were then used to investigate the issue of personalisation of context-aware services, focusing mainly on navigation services for visually impaired people. Firstly, the 'user's context' was investigated, where significant differences were found in the use of landmarks to navigate by people with a central vision loss, people with a peripheral vision loss, and registered blind people. Secondly, the 'application's context' involved designing context-aware services for transmission to participants within indoor and outdoor routes. Thirdly, the 'user-application's context', which brought together the first two perspectives, was investigated where it was found that certain groups were more effective at reaching landmarks when being given information that derived from people in the same visual impairment category. The multidisciplinary model, and the studies investigating its three key perspectives, were combined to form a user-centred framework for contextaware design. Key contributions included (i) richer modelling of user-interface interaction in mobile settings, and (ii) an augmentation to existing user-centred design approaches which includes not just meaningful activities of the user but also incidental and unpredictable activities that occur frequently in mobile settings.

This textbook explores the current challenges in and future prospects of context-aware pervasive systems and applications. The phenomenal advances in broadband technology and ubiquitous access to the Internet have transformed Internet computing into the Internet of Things (IoT), which is now evolving toward the Internet of Everything. Modern scientific, engineering, and business applications are increasingly dependent on machine-to-machine communication, wherein there is less human intervention. In turn, this creates a need for context-aware pervasive systems and applications in which RFID, sensors, and smartphones play a key role. The book provides an essential overview of context, context management, and how to perform context management in various use cases. In addition, it addresses context-aware computing and personalization, various architectures for context-aware systems, and security issues. The content is explained using straightforward language and easy-to-follow examples, case studies, technical descriptions, procedures, algorithms, and protocols for context-aware systems.

This book introduces context-aware computing, providing definitions, categories, characteristics, and context awareness itself and discussing its applications with a particular focus on smart learning environments. It also examines the elements of a context-aware system, including acquisition, modelling, reasoning, and distribution of context. It also reviews applications of context-aware computing – both past and present – to offer readers the knowledge needed to critically analyse how context awareness can be put to use. It is particularly to those new to the subject area who are interested in learning how to develop context-aware computing-oriented applications, as well as postgraduates and researchers in computer engineering, communications engineering related areas of information technology (IT). Further it provides practical know-how for professionals working in IT support and technology, consultants and business decision-makers and those working in the medical, human, and social sciences.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Information Management, grade: 2:2, The University of Liverpool, course: MSc in Information Technology, language: English, abstract: The ever-growing incorporation of information technology in day-to-day applications presents new opportunities to develop computer systems that can be aware of the context in which they are operating. Such computer-systems can be inherently more responsive to the expectations of their users. Context-aware systems offer developers and programmers exciting new prospects to gather contextual data and adapt the behavior of their dynamic systems according to user expectations. In conjunction with mobile devices, such mechanisms can be extremely valuable in increasing the usability of information systems. However, it is now accepted widely that the efforts to adapt the usability and capability of the desktop PC in to the mobile environment are limited in their scope. The debate in present literature seems to focus in particular on the trade-offs and compromises between the performance of such systems in theoretical or laboratory environments, and the actual results when tested in the field. This essay will aim to critically evaluate the success of making context-aware information systems into a feasible reality.

'Context' is defined as ‘any information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity’. Nowadays, the increasing availability of communication networks, the miniaturization and progressive reduction in the cost of sensors and the penetration of advanced mobile personal devices make possible to collect and process data from multiple sources and combine them in order to automatically infer knowledge about the user’s situation. Thus, the CONTEXTS Workshop aims at gathering advances on key elements that enable the design and deployment of personalized ubiquitous context-aware services and natural non-intrusive methods for interaction. The Workshop is organized and funded by the CONTEXTS Programme, one of the largest cooperative research initiatives in Madrid, with the participation of institutions from all over Spain and with the support of international experts. The CONTEXTS Programme focuses on advancing the key elements in frontier communications and location technologies, data processing and multisensor fusion and paradigms for intelligent/adaptative management, which make feasible the development of advanced personalized applications for ambient intelligence.

Today, mobile technology is part of everyday life and activities and the mobile ecosystems are blossoming, with smartphones and tablets being the major growth drivers. The mobile phones are no longer just another device, we rely on their capabilities in work and in private. We look to our mobile phones for timely and updated information and we rely on this being provided any time of any day at any place. Nevertheless, no matter how much you trust and love your mobile phone the quality of the information and the user experience is directly associated with the sources and presentation of information. In this perspective, our activities, interactions and preferences help shape the quality of service, content and products we use. Context-aware systems use such information about end-users as input mechanisms for producing applications based on mobile, location, social, cloud and customized content services. This represents new possibilities for extracting aggregated user-centric information and includes novel sources for context-aware applications. Accordingly, a Design Research based approach has been taken to further investigate the creation, presentation and tailoring of user-centric information. Through user evaluated experiments findings show how multi-dimensional context-aware information can be used to create adaptive solutions tailoring the user experience to the users' needs. Research findings in this work; highlight possible architectures for integration of cloud computing services in a heterogeneous mobile environment in future context-aware solutions. When it comes to combining context-aware results from local computations with those of cloud based services, the results provide findings that give users tailored and adapted experiences based on the collective efforts of the two.
