This volume marks the twentieth anniversary of the first publication of this groundbreaking book. It reflects the pioneering research of its contributors to the development of modern Welsh women’s history. The eight chapters range widely across time (1830-1939) and place, from exploring working class women’s community sanctions and the perils facing collier’s wife to the very different lifestyles of ironmasters’ wives. They also tackle the idealised images of respectable Welsh women in periodicals and the tragic reality of those who took their own lives as well as showing us the transgressive actions of suffrage rebels. They examine how women carved out space within movements such as temperance and track the fluctuating fortunes of women’s employment and domestic life from the Great War to the eve of the Second World War. This volume makes available once more a book that has become a classic in its field and a vital part of the historiography of modern Wales. This expanded edition also brings us up to date. It reveals the research and publications of the last two decades and comments upon the extent to which Wales has moved beyond being the familiar ‘land of our fathers’. Written in a lively and accessible style, it nevertheless draws upon a wealth of research and expertise and should appeal to both the academic community and to a much wider readership.

Women And Gender In Early Modern Wales written by Michael Roberts and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

Traditionally, the narratives of Welsh history have been masculine in their emphasis. Women and Gender in Early Modern Wales helps to redress the balance as it examines the material, social and cultural experiences of women in Wales and explores how those experiences were defined alongside or against those of men. It is the first book devoted to the lives of women in Wales during the period from the alter middle ages to the eve of the industrial revolution, and the first study to deal with the history of shifting gender identities in Wales in any period. Michael Roberts and Simone Clarke have brought together an exciting team of authors to examine the character and evolution of male and female identities in the early modern period. Issues addressed include female contributions to the poetic tradition, attitudes towards witchcraft and female abduction, the role of women in the emerging Nonconformist movements, the changing political and social responsibilities of men following the Acts of Union, and an exploration of women's experiences as presented in a range of sources from the records of the law courts to the work of the embroiderer. Women and Gender in Early Modern Wales is a pioneering yet accessible volume which not only has wide-ranging and important implications for early modern Welsh historiography, but also provides the basis for the comparative study of gendered experience in this period, both in the British Isles and beyond.

The history of Welsh people has often been camouflaged in British history yet women have also been rendered inconspicuous within their own Welsh history. This book seeks to shed light on the history of women within the context of the history of Wales between 1830 and 1939.

This book tells the compelling and revealing story of the women’s movement in modern Wales. Its panoramic sweep takes the reader on a journey from the nineteenth-century campaigns in support of democracy and the right to vote, and in opposition to slavery, through to the construction of the labour movement in the twentieth century, and on to the more recent demands for sexual liberation and LGBTQ+ rights. At its core is the argument that the Welsh women’s movement was committed to social democracy, rather than to liberal or conservative alternatives, and that material conditions were the central motivation of those women involved. Drawing on an array of sources, some of which appear in print for the first time, this is a vivid portrait of women who, out of a struggle for equality, individually and collectively, became political activists, grassroots journalists, members of councils and parliaments, and inspirational community leaders.

For Women For Wales And For Liberalism written by Ursula Masson and has been published by University of Wales Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-01 with Political Science categories.

This book explores the neglected history of women who were active in Liberal politics, campaigning for women's rights, the vote, and a full role for women in Welsh public life, at the end of the nineteenth century, and before the First World War. The over-arching argument of the book is that Welsh women's Liberal politics was distinctive, in its attempt to integrate an understanding of Liberalism which they shared with their English counterparts, and which included the aim of full equality for women, with a distinctively Welsh political agenda, and constructions of Welsh national identity. These constructions sometimes included a positive view of women in the nation, but in times of political crisis redefined gender on a more reactionary model.

This insightful and revealing collection of essays focuses on seven Welsh women who, in a range of imaginative ways, resisted the status quo in Wales, England and beyond during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Written by an acclaimed biographical historian, the essays not only challenge expectations about how women's lives were lived in the last two centuries, they also explore different ways of approaching biographical writing and understanding, as well as raising issues of gender and nationality. From the pioneer doctor and champion of progressive causes, Frances Hoggan, to the irrepressible twentieth-century novelist Menna Gallie, these women spoke out for what they believed in, and sometimes they paid the price. Although proud of their Welsh identity, they articulated it in a variety of ways, and each spent most of their adult lives outside Wales. They became familiar, and often controversial voices, on the page and platform in London, Oxford, Northern Ireland and internationally. Lady Rhondda and Edith Picton-Turbervill championed women's equality at the centre of power in Westminster, whilst Myvanwy and Olwen Rhys saw education as the key to change. Women's suffrage played a prominent part in the lives of these women and was especially central to Margaret Wynne Nevinson's thinking, writing and actions. The intelligence, determination and grit of these women is revealed through their stirring stories. Taken together, the essays critically investigate the challenges, setbacks and hard-won achievements of feisty women who rocked the boat over a period of 150 years.

Like many other aspects of life, education in the 1950s and 1960s still meant segregation for most girls. But the 1950s and 1960s also brought rock'n'roll, rising hemlines and the first signs of female emancipation since the vote. The third title in Honno's Voices series - a series dedicated to bringing Welsh history to life -focuses on everyday life during this transformative period.
