In 2016, Sir Geoffrey Palmer and Andrew Butler proposed and published a written, codified constitution for Aotearoa New Zealand. Since then the authors have travelled the country, discussing with the public the nature of New Zealand's identity and where the country is headed. After considering their conversations and formal submissions, this second book - with its revised proposal for a codified constitution - is the product of a year in development. Towards Democratic Renewal reinforces Palmer and Butler's argument for a robust and democratic framework that will safeguard our political system against future challenges, from climate change to earthquakes, 'post-truth' politics and surveillance. This clear, revised constitution defines and entrenches government accountability and transparency, protects the rights of our peoples and tangata whenua, and offers transformative steps to uphold the sovereignty and integrity of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Voices Of The People written by Patrick Dunleavy and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Political Science categories.

Voices of the People summarises and analyses a decade of regular polls on constitutional issues, undertaken under the auspices of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Truse, which reveal the people to be more radical democrats than the political classes - big majorities in favour of a written constitution, freedom of information, proportional representation in parliamentary elections, a largely elected House of Lords, an expanded Bill of Rights and greater decentralisation of power. In addition, there is a widespread distrust of government and ongoing concern over 'sleaze'. A mine of information about public attitudes to constitutional issues over the last decade, and a cogent commentary ont hose attitudes and what they imply for the future of reform, Voices of the People is essential reading for political anoraks and the chattering classes - and for the people themselves.

The story of liberal democracy over the last half century has been a triumphant one in many ways, with the number of democracies increasing from a minority of states to a significant majority. Yet substantial problems afflict democratic states, and while the number of democratic countries has expanded, democratic practice has contracted. This book introduces a novel framework for evaluating the rise and decline of democratic governance. Examining three mature democratic countries – Britain, Australia and New Zealand – the authors discuss patterns of governance from the emergence of mass democracy at the outset of the twentieth century through to its present condition. The shared political cultures and institutional arrangements of the three countries allow the authors to investigate comparatively the dynamics of political evolution and the possibilities for systemic developments and institutional change.

Degenerations Of Democracy written by Craig Calhoun and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-17 with Political Science categories.

Three leading thinkers analyze the erosion of democracy’s social foundations and call for a movement to reduce inequality, strengthen inclusive solidarity, empower citizens, and reclaim pursuit of the public good. Democracy is in trouble. Populism is a common scapegoat but not the root cause. More basic are social and economic transformations eroding the foundations of democracy, ruling elites trying to lock in their own privilege, and cultural perversions like making individualistic freedom the enemy of democracy’s other crucial ideals of equality and solidarity. In Degenerations of Democracy three of our most prominent intellectuals investigate democracy gone awry, locate our points of fracture, and suggest paths to democratic renewal. In Charles Taylor’s phrase, democracy is a process, not an end state. Taylor documents creeping disempowerment of citizens, failures of inclusion, and widespread efforts to suppress democratic participation, and he calls for renewing community. Craig Calhoun explores the impact of disruption, inequality, and transformation in democracy’s social foundations. He reminds us that democracies depend on republican constitutions as well as popular will, and that solidarity and voice must be achieved at large scales as well as locally. Taylor and Calhoun together examine how ideals like meritocracy and authenticity have become problems for equality and solidarity, the need for stronger articulation of the idea of public good, and the challenges of thinking big without always thinking centralization. Dilip Parameshwar Gaonkar points out that even well-designed institutions will not integrate everyone, and inequality and precarity make matters worse. He calls for democracies to be prepared for violence and disorder at their margins—and to treat them with justice, not oppression. The authors call for bold action building on projects like Black Lives Matter and the Green New Deal. Policy is not enough to save democracy; it will take movements.
