The offshore towage of large floating structures has been the broad subject of research since the 1960's. The selection of a tug to engage in a tow is based on rules laid down by class and marine warranty surveyors derived from years of experience but a rigorous assessment of these rules based on a comprehensive real world datasets has not been possible. This is principally due to the nature of these tows, usually employing tugs chartered at short notice from the spot market, the long towline lengths when under tow and the high value of the tow itself. Given the commercial implications in being able to better match a suitable tug to any given tow, this research lays down the requirements of an ideal dataset, i.e. one that has a record of towline tensions, complete 6DOF of both the tug and tow all recorded to a universal timeline, along with the seastate experienced by the tow at any given point. It then reviews the historical restrictions in gathering this data and that the key issue has been gathering the motions of the unpowered tow and recording the towline tensions.A methodology is then developed which requires no interference with the towline and draws upon Kalman filters for optimal state estimation of the tug and tow's position and attitude in 3D space driving a lumped mass simulation of the towline coded in MatLab. The stiffness properties of key elements of the towline are assessed by FEA and observations made on areas where normal industry practice's may be lacking. Observations on advances in sensor technology as well as other areas for development are then made that provide fertile areas for further research. Finally the full code base for a MatLab, lumped mass simulator is presented in an appendix for future use.

Faired Towline Hydrodynamics written by D. E. Calkins and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1971 with categories.

A theoretical analysis (termed boundary layer loading functions) for determining the hydrodynamic forces on a faired towline was developed. The analysis required that the hydrodynamic forces (loading functions) acting on an element of the towline be defined as functions of the towline's local inclination angle to the flow and the Reynolds number. The analysis was based on the consideration of the boundary layer formed on the airfoil-shaped cross section used for the towlines. The Reynolds Number effect on the loading functions was derived using momentum theory, and the pressure distribution around the airfoil section was defined. When potential flow theory was used, it gave excellent results when compared with the pressure distribution measurements made on models. The theoretical loading functions were compared with model data obtained from water channel, tow tank, and wind tunnel tests. The analytical results showed excellent correlation with the data.

Calculation Of Extreme Towline Tension During Open Ocean Towing written by Alexander Stephen Desroches and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with categories.

A new data base of extreme towline tensions for open ocean towing has been developed that will be incorporated into the U.S. Navy's Program of Ship Salvage Engineering (POSSE). The extreme towline tension consists of the mean towline tension and the peak dynamic tension with a .001 chance of exceedence in a single day. Mean towline tension can be estimated using methods in the U.S. Navy Towing Manual, and is calculated in the main body of POSSE. The statistics of the nonlinear dynamic tensions are determined by a numerical simulation method based on the seakeeping motion of the tug and tow. This simulation method was developed by Jerome H. Milgram. The calculation of the statistics for the dynamic tension is computationally intensive. This requires a data base of extreme tensions (for specified tug, tow, towing speed, sea state, wave angle, and type of towline) to be developed to quickly determine peak tensions. The U.S. Navy Towing Manual has a method of estimating extreme tension. This method neglects the second order wave induced forces that have a significant influence on the surge motions. A revised data base of dynamic tensions was generated that will be incorporated into the POSSE program. This new data base helps tow planners to quickly analyze extreme tensions for different towing conditions, and anticipate dangerous peak tensions. This will result in safer open ocean towing evolutions.

A Graphical Method For Determining Towline Trail And The Shape Of A Towline Curve written by Alan E. Markowitz and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1966 with categories.

In VDS applications, it is desirable to know the shape of the towline curve in order to determine the position of the towed body relative to the towing vessel. If kiting is nonexistent, the towline can be assumed to lie in a vertical plane and its shape can be described in an X and Y coordinate system. The Y-axis would represent depth and the X-axis would represent trail, the distance directly astern of the towing vessel. This memorandum describes a technique for determining the values of X, trail, and the shape of the towline curve.

Investigation Of Hydrodynamic Loading On Faired Towline written by A. Brisbane and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1964 with categories.

The results of an investigation of the steady-state hydrodynamic loads on faired towlines are reported. The lack of a firm basis for the engineering design of towlines is recognized as a critical deficiency in the existing technology and experimental procedures for attainment of data are presented. A test program and the experimental techniques and equipment utilized for an exploratory test are described. Test results obtained with a continuous, fully enclosed faired towline are presented. It is concluded that strong three-dimensional effects are present. Values of the resistance of the towline were observed to be approximately 2 to 2.5 times reported two-dimensional values. The possible influence of the aeration cavity on the observed results is recognized. It is recommended that additional fairing-types and at least one bare cable be tested. (Author).

Investigation Of A Towline With Segmented Fairing For The Variable Depth Sonar System written by John V. Mirabella and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1972 with categories.

The Naval Ship Research and Development Center has established a continuing research program directed toward improving the Variable Depth Sonar (VDS) system. One major area of concern is the system towline. The VDS system has been plagued with problems of towline kiting and fairing breakage caused by the hydromechanic forces acting on the towline during towing and reeling operations. The problem has been present with both sectional enclosed and continuous trailing fairing. The sea trial was directed toward determining whether the towline would kite during towing operation and determining the durability of the new material in the towline.
