At the time the bulker is in the strait of Juan de Fuca in Canadian waters in the Pacific Ocean. Because of a heavy storm the Canadian Coast Guard Service refuses the request by the bulker's senior officers to undertake a rescue mission. Against all good sense a rescue crew from the US Coast Guard volunteers to fly to the scene of the accident. In severe fog and wind gusts of up to 91 mph a Coast Guard helicopter sets off over the open sea. Despite the extremely difficult weather conditions and the serious condition of the injured man the operation to winch him off the ship is carried out successfully. While he is in the town hospital Yaroslav meets widely different people, both American and Russian, and he can observe American society with its pluses and minuses. He also sees the reality of emigration, which is strikingly different to the impression of American life that is commonly held in Russia. The story is based on real events.
