Quando tratamos das mulheres, temos que, antes de qualquer pronunciamento, nos lembrar de que elas sempre representaram a metade da população mundial. Isto é, a metade masculina representava toda a humanidade, sendo a população feminina apenas um apêndice do homem, quando o assunto em questão acontecia fora da esfera doméstica. O mundo das mulheres, com raras exceções, se restringia ao lar. Esta ocorrência foi comum durante séculos, sendo que, nenhuma outra forma de cultura contribuiu mais para a criação, para a legislação, para a imposição, para a consolidação e para a manutenção desta mentalidade do que a cultura religiosa. E quando não era a religião que criava a norma discriminatória, ela a absorvia da cultura local e a incluía no seu código de leis, contribuindo assim para a sua consolidação e, ao contrário, quando a religião criava uma norma discriminatória, então o estado a absorvia e a incluía nos códigos civis, reforçando assim a sua imposição. Enfim, as religiões foram as principais instituições responsáveis pela criação e pela manutenção da cultura discriminatória e submissa das mulheres, cuja contaminação se espalhou para os costumes, para a educação, para a legislação, para a economia, para a política, para a justiça, para as artes, para as profissões, etc., ou seja, para todos os segmentos da sociedade.
