The Roman Republic of 1849 is one of the most exciting moment of the heroic season of the Italian Risorgimento, a short adventure in which the contemporaries recognized the opportunity to realize ideals of freedom, tolerance and democracy. This research aims to analyses the role played by religion in the political and social experiment that started in Rome after the pope’s escape, when it was necessary to redefine relations between civil and religious authorities, as well as the role of religion itself in society: a task not at all easy if applied to a State reality, where political and religious powers had been superimposed for centuries, but that will set an inescapable precedent for the subsequent attempts to build a secular State.

Ippolito II d’Este (1509-1572), cardinal and prince of Ferrara, played a crucial role in shaping the political and cultural connections between Italy and France. Seen by his contemporaries as staunchly ‘French’, his life rather followed a difficult balance between the political and spatial entities – Rome, Paris, and Ferrara – through which he continuously moved and from which he derived his power. Following his career as cardinal protector of the Valois crown, royal administrator of Siena on behalf of Henry II, and papal legate to France on the eve of the Wars of Religion, this book argues that Ippolito’s apparent diplomatic access ultimately weakened his family’s position in Italy and left it ill-equipped to compete in the changing politics of the peninsula.

Furono oltre 2000 i bambini d’origine subsahariana che nel corso del 1800 vennero riscattati dalla schiavitù ed educati in Europa da parte di missionari cattolici, con lo scopo di rimandarli in Africa come «missionari indigeni». Eppure, fino ad oggi questo fenomeno non ha quasi trovato posto nella storiografia e nella memoria collettiva. Dimenticato, forse, o rimosso. Vittime di scelte altrui, ma anche protagonisti delle proprie, i cosiddetti «moretti» non furono semplici satelliti orbitanti intorno ai missionari europei, ma veri e propri «agenti della storia». Questo libro è un primo tentativo di sottrarli alle periferie delle nostre narrazioni e di restituire loro un posto e un nome. Gli archivi parlano chiaro: gli afro-europei non sono protagonisti solo della storia europea più recente.

Il volume si propone di offrire una nuova prospettiva d’indagine per lo studio degli ordini mendicanti tra XIII e XIV secolo tramite l’esempio dei Servi di Maria in Italia centro-settentrionale. Lo studio, nonostante prenda in considerazione un ordine cosiddetto ‘minore’, ha permesso di affrontare due questioni cruciali per la storia dell’Occidente bassomedievale: la prima riguarda le trasformazioni della religiosità tra XIII e XIV secolo che videro come protagonisti nuovi ceti e strutture sociali; la seconda concerne invece l’espansione urbana, la crescita economica e i cambiamenti politico-istituzionali e socio-culturali che caratterizzarono le città del tempo. Di questi processi i Servi di Maria furono espressione e in seguito fini interpreti, divenendo attori tutt’altro che marginali nello scenario sociale dell’Italia bassomedievale.

Cette recherche porte sur l’action diplomatique et religieuse des cardinaux d’Este et sur leur rôle de médiateurs entre l’Italie et la France. L’objectif est de faire apparaître les fondements géopolitiques de leur action, en prenant soin de faire ressortir les différentes échelles de leur action.
