[Italiano]:L’associazionismo è un fenomeno che ha caratterizzato la storia di Ponticelli dagli ultimi anni dell’Ottocento a oggi. Dalla fine della seconda guerra mondiale, per circa tre decenni, il Partito Comunista Italiano e in genere la Sinistra ebbero un ruolo egemonico nella vita civile di questo quartiere di Napoli di antiche tradizioni contadine e operaie. In tale clima, nel 1974, sorse la Casa del popolo, che divenne luogo-simbolo dei comunisti napoletani e centro di iniziative culturali d’interesse nazionale. Qui si organizzarono convegni, mostre d’arte, laboratori teatrali e didattici diretti da «docenti impegnati», «registi d’avanguardia» e «operatori estetici», cioè da intellettuali solidali con un progetto organico di riforma della vita civile delle periferie geografiche e sociali. La crisi dei partiti della Sinistra ha comportato una progressiva rarefazione delle attività della Casa del Popolo, ma non la fine di quell’impulso che la vide nascere e prosperare, come dimostra il caso dell’Associazione Arci Movie, nata nel 1990 e tuttora impegnata nella diffusione della cultura cinematografica dentro e fuori Ponticelli. In questo libro si rintracciano fatti e persone di questa recente stagione culturale e politica divenuta improvvisamente remota nella memoria collettiva, nell’intenzione di arginarne la disgregazione, che si palesa non casualmente anche nello smarrimento delle sue tracce documentarie./[English]:Associationism is a phenomenon has characterized the history of Ponticelli from the last years of 19th century until today. Since the end of the Second World War, for about three decades, the Italian Communist Party and, generally, the Left had a hegemonic role in the civil life of this Naples district of ancient farming and working-class traditions. In this context, in 1974, the House of People was born, which became the symbolic place of Neapolitan communists and the center of cultural initiatives with national resonance. Conferences, art exhibitions, theatrical and educational workshops were organized and directed by: «committed teachers», «avant-garde directors» and «aesthetic operators», that is, by intellectuals with an organic civil life reform project of the geographical and social suburbs. The crisis of Left Parties has led to a progressive rarefaction of the House of People’s activities, but not to the end of its spirit, as shown by the Arci Movie Association. The association, born in 1990, is still engaged in the diffusion of film culture inside and outside Ponticelli. In this book it is possible to trace facts and people of this recent cultural and political season, which has suddenly faded in the collective memory, with the goal to contain its disintegration also manifested in the loss of documentary tracks

[Italiano]: La cultura, come ha affermato Carlo Ginzburg, non è solo la sapienza dei dotti, ma anche quel «complesso di atteggiamenti, credenze, codici di comportamento» che caratterizza una popolazione. Una delle sue espressioni fondamentali è costituita dagli oggetti. Utilizzando la materialità come chiave di accesso, il volume indaga la storia della società napoletana durante il Settecento in alcune delle sue molteplici articolazioni: aristocrazia, togati, ceto medio e popolo. L’idea di definire con precisione le componenti della società di antico regime si è ormai dimostrata utopistica, anche perché i criteri di definizione e di legittimazione erano allora molteplici e variegati: attestazioni giuridiche, occupazione, provenienza geografica, potere economico. In questo complicato universo, il possesso di specifici beni costituiva un elemento importante nel definire l’appartenenza degli individui a un gruppo, in quanto assunzione di un comune stile di vita, ma soprattutto in quanto condivisione di elementi ideali. Le ricchezze da cui è possibile cogliere queste dinamiche socio-culturali, lasciate in eredità e annotate negli inventari, non erano solo costituite da sontuosi gioielli o abiti sfarzosi; potevano essere anche cucchiai di ferro, crocifissi di piombo o perle di vetro colorato. Eppure, quali che fossero le loro caratteristiche, gli oggetti non avevano solo un valore economico, ma erano anche portatori di significati simbolici./[English]: According to Carlo Ginzburg, culture is not only the scholars’ knowledge, but it is also made of all the mixture of a population attitudes, beliefs and behaviours. In this sense, objects are one of the culture’s main expressions. Using materiality as a key, the volume analyses the history of the Neapolitan society during the Eighteenth century in some of its multiple articulations: aristocracy, law men, middle class, lower class. The idea of defining the strata of the ancien regime society is now considered unfeasible, partly because the criteria of definition and legitimation were multiple and different at the time: legal certifications, occupation, geographical origin, wealth. In this complicated universe, owning specific goods was part of the process of definition of the individual affiliation to a group, in terms of having a similar life style, as well as adopting the same ideals. The objects, inherited and annotated into inventories, useful to understand this phaenomenon, were not only precious dresses and jewels, but also iron spoons, lead cruxes, or glass beads. Despite their physical features, the value of these goods was not just economic; it stands also in the symbolic meaning they carried.

[Italiano]: Prendendo come fonte di partenza la cronaca inedita di Andrea Rubino (Notitia di quanto è occorso in Napoli dal 1648 fino a tutto il 1669) e le numerose descrizioni di cerimonie e apparati decorativi in essa contenute, il volume affronta il problema del controllo dello spazio della città di Napoli negli anni successivi alla rivolta di Masaniello. Il testo analizza la “politica cerimoniale” di cinque viceré - dal conte di Oñate a Pedro Antonio de Aragón - affiancata da quella del governo municipale e del capitolo della cattedrale, e sottolinea i momenti di attrito tra i diversi cerimoniali e la realizzazione polifonica dei principali eventi festivi. Lo studio integra l’analisi di diverse fonti: le cronache, gli avvisi (in particolare quelli conservati a Roma e Modena), le polizze di pagamento degli antichi banchi napoletani, i protocolli notarili, le consulte del Consejo de Italia, i viglietti dei viceré, quadri e incisioni dell’epoca e, ovviamente, le relazioni - manoscritte e a stampa - destinate a trasmettere il discorso della festa. Queste ultime, generalmente considerate come fonte di partenza per lo studio di ogni cerimonia, risultano fortemente ridimensionate dal confronto con una documentazione di carattere meno intenzionale. Il “tributo ossequioso” delle feste diventa dunque parte integrante di una contrattatazione dell’esercizio del potere che acquista la sua visibilità all’interno dello spazio urbano, in cui non solo le grandi cerimonie scenografiche ma anche le semplici feste per le inaugurazioni delle opere pubbliche sono indicate come un’importante occasione per la rappresentazione del consenso. ./[English]: Starting from the unpublished chronicle of Andrea Rubino (Notitia di quanto è occorso in Napoli dal 1648 fino a tutto il 1669) and the numerous descriptions of ceremonies and festivals’ decorations that it describes, the present work deals with the issue of controlling Naples’ urban space in the years following the revolt of Masaniello (1647-1648). The book analyzes the "ceremonial policy" of five viceroys - from the Count of Oñate to Pedro Antonio de Aragón - flanked by that of the municipal government and the cathedral chapter, and highlights some instances of friction between the different ceremonials to show the polyphonic source of the main festive events. The study integrates the analysis of different sources: the chronicles, the gazettes (in particular those preserved in Rome and Modena), the payments of Neapolitan public banks, the notary protocols, the consultations of the Consejo de Italia, the viceroys' viglietti, paintings and engravings and, of course, the festival books - handwritten and printed - intended to convey the discourse of festival. The latter, generally considered as main sources for the study of each ceremony, are properly contextualized by comparing and contrasting them with “less biased” forms of documentation. The "obsequious tribute" offered through the festivals becomes a way for negotiating the exercise of power that acquires its visibility within the urban space, in which not only the great scenic festivals but also the simple ceremonies for the inauguration of public works were an important opportunity for representing consensus

Cosa significava essere straniero in una realtà dell’Europa moderna, prima dell’affermazione dello Stato di diritto, del principio di uguaglianza, del diritto internazionale? Questo libro cerca di rispondere a tale domanda a partire da un contesto specifico, il Regno di Napoli, focalizzando l’attenzione su un aspetto particolare, quello della mobilità. Le società di antico regime erano ben lungi dall’essere immobili, molte persone si spostavano, anche per lunghi tragitti, spinte da molteplici esigenze ma soprattutto dalla necessità di lavorare. Nel tentativo di incanalare e controllare i flussi migratori, le autorità imponevano regole e procedure, obbligando i viaggiatori a dotarsi di specifici documenti e sottoporsi a controlli lungo le strade e nei luoghi dove prendevano alloggio. Chi infrangeva le norme era accusato di vagabondaggio, un crimine molto grave che portava all’arresto immediato e a condanne severe. Il libro approfondisce il modo in cui le istituzioni napoletane (centrali e periferiche, laiche ed ecclesiastiche) categorizzavano le persone in movimento, mostrando come il non essere nativo del Regno rappresentasse soltanto uno degli elementi presi in considerazione, accanto ad altri come la fede religiosa, la lingua parlata, lo status sociale. Ne emerge un quadro ricco di sfumature, nel quale gli stranieri – ma anche gli abitanti del Regno – sfruttavano le zone d’ombra della normativa per aggirarla oppure se ne avvalevano per proteggersi dall’eccessivo arbitrio di chi era preposto ai controlli.

Starting with the Lutheran Reformation, the Church of Rome realised the need both to defend itself against its enemies, old and new, external and internal, and to 'Christianise' its own faithful, to put in order the numerous contradictions that existed between doctrinal prescriptions and the concrete religious experience of the faithful. The instruments used were many, from confraternities to missionaries, inquisitors, the rediscovery of the first martyrs and the catacombs. What emerges, from the many sources used in the text, is an unruly Christianity, often unaware even of basic dogmas. Through various case studies, the reader is presented with a religious history of the modern age, and in particular of the 18th century, used as a passepartout to understand the changes in popular mentality at a time when the Church was gradually forced to redesign its role in society.

[Italiano]: Il volume affronta il tema della questione feudale, cruciale per la storia del Mezzogiorno, in un lungo Settecento, dal viceregno austriaco all’Ottocento preunitario. Dibattito storiografico, trattati giuridici, scritti filosofici ed economici, documenti amministrativi, norme e contestazioni: intorno alla feudalità e al ruolo del feudo nei processi di nobilitazione e di mobilità sociale è tutto un intreccio di interventi governativi, riflessioni, proteste, talora ribellioni. La questione feudale si conferma come nodo problematico delle politiche e dei dibattiti riformatori, dei progetti di sviluppo civile e economico delle Sicilie nel quadro delle trasformazioni e dei condizionamenti europei, e della stessa tradizione storiografica sul e del Mezzogiorno. Non solo ma, tutt’altro che mera invenzione polemica degli scrittori illuministi, riemerge come dimensione costitutiva dell’organizzazione sociale, politica e giuridica, anche se lontana, certo, dal rappresentare nel suo insieme la storia meridionale. Tentativi di riforma e resistenze si snodano lungo l’arco del secolo, da Carlo di Borbone e dal suo ministro Bernardo Tanucci via via fino alla legge antifeudale del 1799 e alle leggi eversive di Giuseppe Bonaparte e Gioacchino Murat./[English]: The volume deals with the theme of the feudal question, crucial for the history of the Mezzogiorno, in a long eighteenth century, from the Austrian period to the beginning of nineteenth century. Historiographic debate, legal treaties, philosophical and economic writings, administrative documents, rules and disputes: around feudalism and the role of the feud in the processes of ennobling and social mobility there is a whole interweaving of government interventions, reflections, protests, sometimes rebellions. The feudal question is confirmed as a problematic node of reform policies, of civil and economic development projects of Sicilies in the context of European transformations, and of the historiographic tradition on and of the South. Not only that but, far from a mere polemical invention of the Enlightenment writers, it re-emerges as a constitutive dimension of the social, political and legal organization, although certainly far from representing southern history as a whole. Attempts at reform and resistance unfold throughout the century, from Charles of Bourbon and his minister Bernardo Tanucci up to the anti-feudal law of 1799 and the subversive laws of Giuseppe Bonaparte and Gioacchino Murat.
