This book outlines the characteristics and implications of a potential geography of uncertainty. In doing so, it analyses this concept in reference to both the origins of uncertainty in Early Modern Age and the current geopolitical situation. The book adopts an interdisciplinary approach to uncertainty, drawing on global perspectives and literature to define its meanings and characteristics. In order to develop a thorough and precise understanding of the geography of uncertainty, a broad perspective is adopted, which includes other forms of knowledge in which the concept of uncertainty is firmly established. As such the book creates temporal links, that may occasionally be far off from one another, to present a geographical perspective of uncertainty. It provides an interpretation of the phenomenon of globalization in a new way, relating it to the first European openness to global spaces, the Early Modern Age, and identifying the transition from the medieval world to the Modern Age as the first manifestation of uncertainty in geography. Uncertainty is more prevalent than ever in today's geopolitical, economic, financial and social reality, as well as the ongoing emergencies and crises. The book adopts an interdisciplinary approach rooted in the geography of Early Modernity by referring to geopolitical scenarios, literature and philosophy, to target the historical roots and the prevailing configuration of the geography of uncertainty. It will appeal to scholars and students of human and political geography, politics, philosophy, international relations, economics and history.

Italy is not a country for young people. Why? This book provides a unique and in-depth collection of empirical and theoretical material providing multiple answers to this question whilst investigating the living conditions of young people in Italy today. By bringing together a variety of approaches and methods, the authors of this collection analyze Italian youth through the lenses of three dimensions: ‘Activism, participation and citizenship’, ‘Work, Employment and Careers’ and ‘Moves, Transitions and Representations’. These dimensions are the analytical building blocks for challenging stereotypes and unveiling misinterpretations and taken-for-granted assumptions that portray young people in Italy as selfish, ‘choosy’, and unwilling to make sacrifices, commit and manage an independent life. These prejudices often underplay the role of constraints they are facing in the transition to adulthood. Studying Italian youth, therefore, not only allows us to capture their peculiar characteristics but also to reflect more broadly on the conceptual toolbox we need in order to understand contemporary youth more generally. Un bravo manager annusa l’aria sente se il clima dell’ azienda è buono o cattivo. Per dirla con Bob Dylan, così come «non serve un meteorologo per capire da che parte tira il vento», allo stesso modo sembrerebbe non servire uno studioso di organizzazione per capire il clima di un’azienda. Tale atteggiamento è molto diffuso e si basa sull’assunto che tutti (imprenditori, manager, lavoratori) sappiano/sentano se «splende il sole» o «infuria la bufera». I fenomeni estremi sono per loro natura evidenti. Le cose iniziano però a complicarsi quando l’azienda non è così piccola e semplice da poter essere osservata a colpo d’occhio, quando non ci troviamo di fronte a fenomeni chiari e definibili in maniera uniforme, quando si passa del semplice sentire al più complesso analizzare e interpretare. Il libro ha il grande merito di mettere il management e chi si occupa di risorse umane di fronte all’importanza di comprendere in modo scientifico la relazione che lega le persone al proprio lavoro, ai colleghi, ai capi e all’azienda. Il metodo proposto permette di misurare, analizzare e interpretare il clima organizzativo per costruire una solida base su cui prendere decisioni, partendo dal presupposto che l’organizzazione deve dare voce ai propri membri ma anche garantire le condizioni affinché tale voce sia «sincera» e non distorta in maniera impropria.

La pandemia da COVID-19 ha profondamente scosso le strutture fondamentali della società mondiale. Perché oltre a volgere lo sguardo al di là dei presenti limiti, coloro chiamati a gestire l'emergenza attuale devono lottare con la quotidiana incertezza, con i problemi dell'immediato, con i dubbi relativi all'attuazione di protocolli gestionali mai né prospettati né sperimentati. Un mondo che sta evolvendo allora, nel bene e purtroppo ancora nel male, nel quale molti sono coloro chiamati ad essere garanti di una variabilità della performance che deve essere tenuta entro limiti accettabili nel mare scosso dalla pandemia globale. A questi ci rivolgiamo, perché ci permettano di far tesoro delle loro esperienze, perché ci facciano conoscere il loro modo di essere resilienti, perché la società ha bisogno di sapere che ci sono uomini e donne in grado di salvarci attraverso il lavoro, l'abnegazione, il sacrificio quotidiano. Ci proponiamo allora di raccogliere il loro pensiero, che come testimonianza storica e sociale, faccia comprendere quello che si è fatto e si dovrà da fare, perché un nuovo mondo sia possibile.
