"Trabajos de amor perdido" es una de las primeras comedias escritas por William Shakespeare a finales del siglo XVI. Esta obra es considerada una de las comedias más poéticas y extravagantes del autor, a causa de su uso altamente preciso e intelectual del lenguaje, sus referencias literarias y su estilo. "Trabajos de amor perdido" cuenta la historia de Fernando, rey de Navarra, y tres de sus caballeros, Berowne, Longaville y Dumaines. La obra empieza cuando los cuatro hombres juran aislarse del mundo durante tres años para centrarse en sus estudios y alcanzar una mayor sabiduría. El juramento incluye no tener contacto con mujeres, hecho que se vuelve totalmente muy difícil de navegar cuando la princesa de Francia y sus damas visitan al rey. Aunque la princesa y las damas se alojan fuera del castillo, el rey y los caballeros acaban reuniéndose con ellas, y en cuestión de segundos acaban perdidamente enamorados de las damas. En ese momento, se inicia un sutil cortejo a través de cartas que al llegar a su destinación son recibidas con enorme burla a causa de su estilo pedante, lo que producirá una enorme tristeza en los caballeros. A través de múltiples bromas que llevarán a un sinfín de malentendidos, las damas ponen a prueba el amor de los caballeros hasta el punto de no creerse que su amor es real, y que todo es un simple entretenimiento. "Trabajos de amor perdido" fue adaptada a la gran pantalla en 2000 por Kenneth Branagh, quien situó la historia en 1930 en vez del siglo XVI para hacerla más accesible a la audiencia. William Shakespeare es considerado como el escritor más significante de la literatura universal. Como dramaturgo Shakespeare escribió tragedias, obras históricas y comedias que aún se ponen hoy día, más de 400 años después. El poeta contemporáneo Ben Johnson comentó sobre Shakespeare en 1623 que "él no pertenecía a una edad, sino que es atemporal."
