This volume addresses a number of experimental techniques and methods for the treatment of data introduced in the last ten years or so in different fields of the atmospheric sciences. Considerable emphasis has been given since their introduction to the use of satellites or spaceborne measurements with a recent example being the important results obtained with UARS. Of particular interest are the airborne instruments developed for the stratospheric measurement campaign organized by the NASA since 1976 to study the ozone hole and followed later by similar experiments to study the high-latitude ozone depletion in the northern hemisphere. The results of these experiments have helped clarify the role of chlorine-bearing compounds in the ozone depletion and the effect of the heterogeneous processes. The book is organized in 4 chapters: the first 3 divide the different techniques according to the location of the measuring instrumentation (ground, air and space) with the 4th chapter dealing with theory and analysis.

Benjamin il fuggitivo, l’esiliato, l’outsider. È da fuggitivo che l’intellettuale tedesco scrive come nessuno ha ancora scritto. È da outsider, incapace di trovare un posto nella cultura della sua epoca, che è costretto a creare il proprio percorso. Un percorso frammentario, indisciplinato, anarchico, che dà vita a forme nuove di pensiero, che si offre come rifugio intellettuale a tutti coloro che coltivano una visione inattuale del mondo. Frammentata è anche l’anomala collezione di oggetti, temi, domande che coabitano dentro il grande cantiere dei Passages di Parigi, a cui Benjamin lavora fin dal 1927 ma che lascerà incompiuto alla sua morte. In quest’opera, all’apparenza sulla Parigi simbolo del capitalismo ottocentesco, tornano le grandi figure, i motivi teorici, gli intrecci speculativi di tutto il cosmo concettuale del filosofo. Perché il passage – il corridoio di vetri e specchi che attraversa palazzi e in cui si susseguono in sequenza negozi eleganti – “è una città, anzi un mondo in miniatura”, in cui si raccolgono le tracce che con il tempo si sono depositate nelle cose, nei luoghi, nelle immagini. Frutto di un pensiero rigoroso ma intensamente poetico, i Passages sono un’opera mai definitiva, sempre capace di nuova vita. Per questo rileggerla permette di trovare nel pensiero di Walter Benjamin combinazioni inedite. Nuove strade si aprono ed è possibile ripercorrere quanto già scritto come qualcosa che non è stato ancora letto e, forse, neppure scritto fino alla fine, una volta per tutte. Percorrendo gli spazi letterali e simbolici della metropoli, Benjamin rintraccia i motivi segreti della grande costruzione culturale europea. Perché il pensiero nasce dall’incontro con le cose: dai volti, dai nomi, dalle figure attraverso cui la modernità disegna i suoi percorsi enigmatici.
