I didn’t deserve a second chance, so what am I supposed to do with the one I got? Callie asked if I was ready. But ready for what? The spotlight? The music? The reality that who I was is going to attack the very fabric of who I am now? No one knows I’m a different person. Well, except the two most important people in my life, a.k.a. the only reason I might have a chance at pulling off the comeback I never saw coming. Then again, that was before fellow rocker Holland Drake crashed into my life. I didn’t ask for her. Heaven knows she didn’t ask for me. No one could blame her for being wary of me, but sometimes it’s not about what makes sense. It’s learning you have a choice when it feels like you don’t. It’s believing even the worst past can still have a future. Most of all, it’s forcing yourself to confront the blessing that often feels like a curse: You’re still alive. You’re still significant. You’re once again Luke Craven, lead singer of Night Shifts Black. (Please note this book addresses depression and suicide in a compassionate, realistic manner.)

Callie asked if I was ready. And that's the question, isn't it? Ready for what? The spotlight? The music? Or ready for life. Ready to face the reality that what I was is going to attack the very fabric of who I am now. No one knows I'm a different person. Well, no one except the two most important people in my life, which is why there's a remote chance I might actually pull off the comeback I never saw coming. Then again, that was before Holland Drake crashed into my life. I didn't ask for her. Heaven knows she didn't ask for me. But sometimes it's not about what makes sense; it's about accepting that not everything will. It's learning you have a choice when it feels like you don't. It's believing even the worst past can still have a future.

Looking at the ways in which the memory of slavery affects present-day relations in Amsterdam, this ethnographic account reveals a paradox: while there is growing official attention to the country’s slavery past (monuments, festivals, ritual occasions), many interlocutors showed little interest in the topic. Developing the notion of “trace” as a seminal notion to explore this paradox, this book follows the issue of slavery in everyday realities and offers a fine-grained ethnography of how people refer to this past – often in almost unconscious ways – and weave it into their perceptions of present-day issues.

"A great tortured rockstar read. Highly recommend!" - Colleen Hoover I’m unpredictable. A genius and underachiever. I’m the song, the voice, the passion, the pain. I am failure, because the music chose me. I’m its victim, not its gift. She destroyed my career. Ruined my life. Pushed me from the shadows and exposed my lies. She’s an all-consuming fire, and now her flames are aimed at me. She loves to watch me burn, but the part we never saw coming? Maybe I needed a fire to claw my way out of the dark. (Please note this book addresses mental illness and addiction in a compassionate, realistic manner.)

Holland was once a superpower upon whose empire the sun never set. Today it is on the leading edge of social change. This history of Holland, from its earliest beginnings to the present day, provides the most up-to-date survey of modern Dutch history, including the current Dutch approach to a number of social issues, such as the welfare state, the environment, socialized medicine, and the role of the military in the post-Cold War world. Containing a wealth of current information and statistics, this work will help the reader to understand the Dutch both within the historical context in which Holland exists and as world leaders in social change as we approach the twenty-first century. This engagingly written history provides a contemporary overview of Holland's geography, economy, political system, and society. Chapters arranged chronologically trace the history and culture of the nation from the Ice Age to the new post-Cold War world. Chapters on recent Dutch history show how Holland has claimed a leading role in social change: the Dutch have authorized euthanasia, socialized medicine, and legalized soft drugs. A selection of brief biographical sketches will introduce the reader to many of the important Dutch personalities throughout Holland's history, and a bibliographical essay will help the researcher to locate recommended books and other materials for further reading.

The Political Economy Of The Dutch Republic written by Oscar Gelderblom and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-24 with History categories.

In the first half of the seventeenth century the Dutch Republic emerged as one of Europe's leading maritime powers. The political and military leadership of this small country was based on large-scale borrowing from an increasingly wealthy middle class of merchants, manufacturers and regents This volume presents the first comprehensive account of the political economy of the Dutch republic from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century. Building on earlier scholarship and extensive new evidence it tackles two main issues: the effect of political revolution on property rights and public finance, and the ability of the nation to renegotiate issues of taxation and government borrowing in changing political circumstances. The essays in this volume chart the Republic's rise during the seventeenth century, and its subsequent decline as other European nations adopted the Dutch financial model and warfare bankrupted the state in the eighteenth century. By following the United Provinces's financial ability to respond to the changing national and international circumstances across a three-hundred year period, much can be learned not only about the Dutch experience, but the wider European implications as well.

Under what conditions were limited forms of self-government possible in medieval and early modern Europe? While many historians have sought an answer by investigating the development of parliamentary institutions in emerging national monarchies and the wider autonomy enjoyed by various city-states within their own borders, James D. Tracy concentrates instead on a relatively neglected phenomenon at an intermediate level of political organization—the self-governing province. Focusing on the province of Holland during the reigns of Charles V and Philip II (1506–1566), Tracy argues convincingly that Holland effectively underwent an apprenticeship in self-government. The seven provinces of the Dutch Republic—among which Holland was the richest and most populous—were the first in history to govern themselves by a consensus among their towns and nobles. The foundations for this internal cohesion were put in place long before the Dutch Revolt; first by medieval provincial dynasties, then by the dukes of Burgundy, and finally by the House of Habsburg. At the turn of the sixteenth century, Holland was urbanized to a surprising degree, with over forty percent of its population residing in some thirty small and mid-sized towns. Forced by external threats to rise above their economic rivalries, the towns joined together through the forum of the provincial parliament, or States of Holland, which came to assume a primary role in the management of public finances. While noting that the growing autonomy of Holland did not make the Dutch Revolt inevitable, Tracy points out that the revolt could hardly have succeeded without provinces that already had a tradition of managing their own affairs. In the broader context of European political institutions, the circumstances that permitted the provincial states to assume many of the functions of government illustrate not only the capacity for self-government but also the formation of genuine body politics.
