Tracing My Mother's Roots in Revilla (Guerrero Viejo) is book number two in a series of three volumes tracing my mother's ancestors. It covers the period 1750 to 1850, although older genealogical references are prevalent throughout the study. Each chapter traces my mother's (Noemí Raquel Rodríguez (1935-2017) ancestors from the time they arrived in Revilla to the time they moved to San Ygnacio, Texas, across the Rio Grande. Her ancestors included some of the founding families of Revilla...Revilla's residents came mainly from Nuevo León and Coahuila. Once in Revilla, many of them made Tamaulipas and Texas their home. In the end, this book is about families with roots in Northeastern Mexico and South Texas. Anyone researching their ancestors in these areas will appreciate this study. This intriguing study of Mexico's participation in world's fairs from 1889 to 1929 explores Mexico's self-presentation at these fairs as a reflection of the country's drive toward nationalization and a modernized image. Mauricio Tenorio-Trillo contrasts Mexico's presence at the 1889 Paris fair—where its display was the largest and most expensive Mexico has ever mounted—with Mexico's presence after the 1910 Mexican Revolution at fairs in Rio de Janeiro in 1922 and Seville in 1929. Rather than seeing the revolution as a sharp break, Tenorio-Trillo points to important continuities between the pre- and post-revolution periods. He also discusses how, internationally, the character of world's fairs was radically transformed during this time, from the Eiffel Tower prototype, encapsulating a wondrous symbolic universe, to the Disneyland model of commodified entertainment. Although Lipan Apache culture was studied by one of the most eminent anthropologists of the twentieth century, many important questions remain. What is the meaning of the tribal name Lipan? Did Morris Opler's 1935 study of historical Lipan culture conform to practices seen by eighteenth century Spaniards? Only four in situ observations of Lipan Apache culture survive - observations made by a Spanish priest, a Spanish military officer, a Swiss botanist and an Anglo captive. Each source reveals fascinating insights into a hitherto unseen world of Lipan beliefs and practices. The sources reported, for example, that the Lipans were able to predict both solar and lunar eclipses, a practice which went far beyond the vision quest posited by Opler. The Light Gray People seeks to complete a comparative analysis of traditional Lipan Apache culture, as seen through the eyes of four eighteenth and nineteenth century observers and Morris Opler's theories.
