Im Tractatus de urbe Brandenburg berichtet ein anonymer Verfasser, wie die Herrschaft über die Brandenburg in der Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts von dem Slawenfürsten Pribislaw/Heinrich auf Markgraf Albrecht den Bären überging. Die kleine Schrift entstand in den 1170er Jahren unter Albrechts Sohn Markgraf Otto I. von Brandenburg und ist damit das älteste erhaltene Zeugnis brandenburgischer Geschichtsschreibung. Sie wurde in der Absicht geschrieben, die rechtlich bedenkliche Inbesitznahme der Brandenburg durch Markgraf Albrecht im Jahr 1157 nachträglich zu legitimieren. Von diesem Werk, das bislang nur in einer stark erweiterten und tendenziös verfälschten Fassung aus späterer Zeit bekannt war, wurde an entlegener Stelle eine neue Handschrift gefunden, die den Text weitaus besser überliefert, so dass eine Rekonstruktion der Originalfassung möglich ist. Christina Meckelnborg analysiert die verschiedenen Fassungen des Tractatus de urbe Brandenburg und legt eine Edition des lateinischen Textes mit deutscher Übersetzung vor.

The history of medieval Germany is still rarely studied in the English-speaking world. This collection of essays by distinguished German historians examines one of most important themes of German medieval history, the development of the local principalities. These became the dominant governmental institutions of the late medieval Reich, whose nominal monarchs needed to work with the princes if they were to possess any effective authority. Previous scholarship in English has tended to look at medieval Germany primarily in terms of the struggles and eventual decline of monarchical authority during the Salian and Staufen eras – in other words, at the "failure" of a centralised monarchy. Today, the federalised nature of late medieval and early modern Germany seems a more natural and understandable phenomenon than it did during previous eras when state-building appeared to be the natural and inevitable process of historical development, and any deviation from the path towards a centralised state seemed to be an aberration. In addition, by looking at the origins and consolidation of the principalities, the book also brings an English audience into contact with the modern German tradition of regional history (Landesgeschichte). These path-breaking essays open a vista into the richness and complexity of German medieval history.

Die historische Forschung hat seit längerem herausgearbeitet, dass Migration nichts von einer Norm Abweichendes ist, sondern vielmehr ein »konstitutives Element der Menschheitsgeschichte« (J. Oltmer), der Mensch mithin stets ein »homo migrans« (K.-J. Bade) war. Auch die Geschichte Brandenburgs wurde seit jeher von Einwanderungsprozessen geprägt. Von »Toleranz« im modernen Sinne kann freilich keine Rede sein, sondern meistens ging es um ökonomisch nutzbringende Aufnahme bestimmter Gruppen. Sehr oft waren die Ansiedlungen aber auch das Ergebnis von Flucht, Vertreibung und kriegerischer Gewalt. Der vorliegende Band zeigt anhand von Beispielen vom frühen Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart die Bedeutung der Zuwanderung für Brandenburg auf. Der Bogen reicht von der slawischen Einwanderung des 8./9. Jahrhunderts bis zur Ankunft russisch-jüdischer »Kontingentflüchtlinge« im Gefolge der deutschen Wiedervereinigung, von Niederländern, Juden, Hugenotten, Revolutionsflüchtlingen in der Frühen Neuzeit bis hin zu Muslimen, Zwangsarbeitern, Vertriebenen und DDR-»Fremdarbeitern« im 20. Jahrhunderts auf Latein verfasst. Sie ist die dritte bekannte erzählende Quelle aus der mittelalterlichen Mark Brandenburg – nach dem Tractatus de urbe Brandenburg, der etwa zwischen 1170 und 1180 entstand, und einer Chronik der Bischöfe von Brandenburg aus der Zeit kurz vor 1240. Das Original der Chronik der Markgrafen von Brandenburg ist verschollen, es gibt Kopien im Stadtarchiv Goslar und in der Stadtbibliothek Trier, die im 14. Jahrhundert angefertigt wurden. Die Aufnahmen dieser Handschriften sind hier mit freundlicher Genehmigung beider Institutionen veröffentlicht. Grundlage der Übersetzung ist die Edition der Chronik der Markgrafen von Brandenburg durch Georg Sello in den Forschungen zur Brandenburgischen und Preußischen Geschichte, Band 1/1888.
