Excerpt from Trading Life in Western in Central Africa Tnls Book is not a record of wonderful explorations. It is simply the experience of frequent travel and residence upon the West Coast of Africa, between the years 1853 and 1875. In the first place, the contents were written in the form of friendly letters without any literary pretence, and were thus published weekly in the porcupine. And then I thought I had done with them. But so many readers, in various parts of the world, (some of whom had only seen a letter occasionally, ) requested the whole to be re-printed, that I was induced to yield to their desire. And have, therefore, revised the letters, and now respectfully submit them to the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Tippoo Tib: The Story of His Career in Central Africa Narrated From His Own Accounts The name of Tippoo Tib is familiar to all who took an interest in the affairs of East Africa or the Congo fifteen or twenty years ago. He was the most remarkable of the band of Arab traders and explorers who, starting from the East Coast, penetrated to the Congo, and were the rulers of whatever country they happened to be in, though they established no states and did not even claim the right of conquest on behalf of their Sovereign, the Sultan of Zanzibar. It is curious to notice how much and how little they effected. They traversed enormous distances, and demonstrated the practicability of many routes through savage kingdoms which were commonly considered pathless wildernesses; but they made no attempt to attach these regions to Zanzibar, or even to convert them to Mohammedanism. The whole history of the Arabs in East Africa shows the same characteristics. They founded their cities on the coast, but made little effort to move inland, and in the rare cases where they did so, as at Tabora and Ujiji, the reason was simply that their slave-raids had depopulated the region near the sea, and they were forced to move on to districts where the game was not so shy. But their territorial and political instincts were feeble. The effective power of the Sultan rarely extended more than ten miles inland from the shore of the mainland. Chapenga S White Man written by Alice Werner and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-13 with categories.

Excerpt from Chapenga's White Man: A Story of Central Africa This story might just as well be called Beck ford's Enfant Terrible, ' or 'imp of Darkness, ' for that matter, seeing that Chapenga was known to his master's friends by both these titles indifferently. But while plenty of people can be found to relate it from Beckford's point of view or that of his friends, the other side of the case is not so well represented, and it seems only fair to give Chapenga a chance. Chapenga's nationality is more or less a matter of conjecture. Beckford himself, un certain whether the boy was a Konde, Wanda, Henga, or something else, called him compre hensively a North Ender.' What seems tolerably clear is, that some time in the year 1886 a small and very skinny brown creature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Hill of Goodbye: The Story of a Solitary White Woman's Life in Central Africa There was a great scarcity of water in this place. We ladies had to content ourselves with a little in a basin which we used alternately. It was muddy, being gathered from a hole dug in the sand. How hot it was But for the air from the sea we could hardly have existed. Yet we were told that up the river it was much hotter, the tempera ture being 120 in the shade. By day we waded through the sand, sinking up to the ankle at every step. At night we sat in the eating room. The door stood wide open. Bats flew above us under the raftered roof while we wrote letters and listened to the lap, lap of waves from the shore. A week after our arrival word came that the steamer the james Stevenson was stuck on a sand bank a short distance up the river. A number of men started in a boat to help to push her off. Every body treated it as a good joke. We ladies were much excited thinking that our escorts might be aboard. But it was not till next day that she arrived, when we learned that no one had come to meet us as yet. Three days after we rose at four in the morning to start on our river journey. It was quite dark but the air was dry for a wonder, as often a-heavy dew falls through the night. The dawn came as soon as we had crossed the gangway. On The Threshold Of Central Africa written by Francois Coillard and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-04 with History categories.

Excerpt from On the Threshold of Central Africa: A Record of Twenty Years' Pioneering Among the Barotsi of the Upper Zambesi The present work is not a systematic history, either of my own missionary career of forty years, or of the Barotsi Mission. These are only scattered leaves, collected, at the request of friends, from the pages of the Journal des Missions Evangeliques, where they have appeared from time to time during the last twenty years, and now published less for those who already know them than for the rising generation, for whom the Africa of the ox-waggon and the assegai will soon be little but a name. Jotted down in the intervals of arduous toil, often by the light of camp-fires, cramped in a canoe, or jolted in a cart, they make no literary pretensions; they are but simple descriptions, which have already proved interesting to some, and which God has deigned to bless. I should have liked to condense them much more, and above all to revise them; but time and health have failed me to do more than glance over the proofs. After all, the untrammelled style of the traveller sits better upon an old African wanderer. In an academical garb, to which I have no title, my friends would not recognise me. I am no painter, but I do admire Nature. Nowadays every one practises photography, myself amongst the number. The illustrations to this volume have been executed from very indifferent negatives; they are the work of a tyro, hampered by adverse conditions of climate and the lack of suitable appliances; and their sole value-if they possess any-is that they are instantaneous views. Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses.
