Despite academic criticism, technical analysis is now used extensively as a tool in financial decision making. Using both daily and intraday data from the Sydney futures exchange, we find that many different types of technical trading rules offer the potential for profit above that generated by a buy-and-hold strategy. Technically based trading rules, when applied to high frequency (hourly) data, prove more successful than when applied to end-of-day data. Analysis of the spot-futures and price-volume relationships using high frequency data reveals a bi-directional causal relationship between spot and futures prices as well as a bi-directional causal relationship between transaction volume and absolute price changes. By testing three filter rules based on these relationships, we find that technical trading rules are enhanced either by increasing profitability or by decreasing losses. We also find that a game theory trading model, when used in conjunction with technical analysis, can prove effective in generating profit above that of the buy-and-hold strategy. Intraday, daily and monthly seasonalities are also examined, concluding that they do not present trading opportunities. The futures price series is not normally distributed and does not follow a random walk. However, serial dependence between price and its lagged variable is evident, which suggests trend-like behaviour. Surprisingly, the trend-following trading systems examined proved the least successful of the systems under investigation.

We study the intra-day impact of algorithmic trading on the futures market to increase our understanding of algorithmic trading and its role in the price formation process. First, we find that algorithmic trading provides liquidity when the spread is wide and that algorithms enter the market at a series of intervals that decrease the spread. Second, we show that algorithmic trading is related to lower adverse selection and is unrelated to realised spreads. Third, we confirm that information asymmetry is highest at the beginning of the trading day, and as the price stabilises during the trading day, we find that the trade becomes the information carrier and algorithmic trading increases. Fourth, we find that algorithmic trades strategically enter the market during periods with less informed trading, while the period following exhibits higher public and private information. Our results suggest that algorithmic traders contribute to the price discovery process of financial markets.

Taming The Bear written by Christopher Tate and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-04 with Business & Economics categories.

A bear market may last for a week, a month or even a few years, but it can take only a day, an hour or even a few minutes for the value of an investment portfolio to be slashed to half of its former value. Some bear markets start with a bang, like the crash of ?7, others creep up slowly so that investors do not realise they are in a bear market and carry on as if nothing has happened. Of course, not even the experts can accurately forecast what the market will do. However, there are signs that can indicate a bear market is approaching and, if recognised, give prudent investors time to take steps to safeguard their portfolios. The first part of this book describes how to recognise the signals that might precede a bear market, and how to watch the various indices for sell signals. The second part deals with methods to help both investors and traders to survive by understanding what changes in volume represent, when to use a moving average and how to stay ahead of the pack. Chris Tate guides the reader step-by-step through his methods, as well as using examples from his own extensive trading experience. He uses charts to explain what to look for in the market and what action to take. This is written in his usual easy-to-understand style.

Changing The Size Of A Futures Contract written by Ahmet K. Karagozoglu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with categories.

We analyze the relation between contract size and liquidity using data from the respecification of Sydney Future Exchange?s (SFE) Share Price Index (SPI) and 90-day Bank Accepted Bill (BAB) futures contracts. Respecification of SPI and BAB contracts presents a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of a change in futures contract size. SFE decreased the size of SPI futures by a factor of four while increasing its minimum tick. The BAB contract was doubled in size with the minimum tick size left unchanged. We find, after controlling for market factors, that the respecification of the SPI futures resulted in higher trading volume, while that of BAB futures decreased trading volume. The results regarding spreads are ambiguous. Based on two cases investigated, we conclude that decreasing the futures contract size was effective in terms of enhancing liquidity while increasing the size resulted in a reduction in liquidity.
