Dieser Band versammelt die Beiträge der Tagung «Helvetische Merkwürdigkeiten. Wahrnehmung und Darstellung der Schweiz in der Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte seit dem 18. Jahrhundert». Im Zentrum der Beiträge stehen bildliche und narrative Entwürfe, die von jeher das Bild der Schweiz prägten. Diese Entwürfe, so genannte helvetische 'Merkwürdigkeiten', werden aus Sicht der Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte vorgestellt und untersucht. Viele der Bilder und Texte avancierten in der Eigen- wie auch in der Fremdwahrnehmung zu Trägern einer nationalen Identität: Sie wurden zum kulturellen Erbe der Eidgenossenschaft stilisiert und darüber hinaus zu Idealen der westlichen Welt verklärt. Das Spektrum der unterschiedlichen Vorstellungs- und Bildwelten umfasst verschiedene Kunstgattungen, darunter Architektur, Malerei, Grafik, Gartenkunst, Flachschnitzerei und Glasmalerei. In den Beiträgen werden die Artefakte und Phänomene bezüglich ihrer Konstruktionen hinterfragt und unter verschiedenen Aspekten - etwa im Kontext von Erinnerungskulturen, Identitätskonstruktionen, Historiografien, Inventarisierungen, Sammlungspolitik, Ausstellungskonzeptionen und Denkmalinszenierungen - diskutiert. Ziel dieser Untersuchungen ist es, Strukturen und Strategien offen zu legen, die seit dem 18. Jahrhundert zu den vermeintlich authentischen, typischen und letztlich nationalen Bildwelten der Schweiz führten.

"Aesthetics and Anthropology" is a collection of contributions by an international and interdisciplinary team of authors from the fields of anthropology, performance studies, curatorial studies and the arts. The title refers to the paths that lead to the in-betweens and the beyonds of aura and trace in the representation of life that is performed in aesthetic reflexivity. Aesthetic reflexivity refers not only to the authors' attempts at an interdisciplinary encounter with one another, but also to their encounter with the readers, and with the recipients of an intended message in an aesthetic dialogue. Our approach is innovative in that it looks upon aesthetics as a "topos of the living". We seek to capture the present discourse of ethnographic and aesthetic disciplinary "turns" with the intent of bringing them together in theory and practice. Here, academics and artists approach one another's respective forms of representation in a "Gesamtkunstwerk" of texts and images. The book presents experimental approaches and interdisciplinary "turns", and hoped-for interactions between anthropologists and artists, and recipients of aesthetic encounters. Ocean Hotspots provides a comprehensive overview of recent and ongoing research on intraplate volcanism in the ocean basins with special emphasis on the Pacific Ocean. The geology of the seamounts and their associated seamount chains is described, along with detailed geophysical, geochemical and hydrothermal observations made by a multi-disciplinary group of marine geoscientists. These observations lead to a deeper understanding of how the ascending mantle melts, represented by hotspots, are able to penetrate the lithosphere, build seamounts, and enhance hydrothermal circulation. The "fixed" hotspot-generated seamount chains also provide key constraints on plate tectonic reconstructions on the Earth's crust.
