Die Schrift : ur Kritik der instrumentellen Vernunft9 die erstmals 1947 unter dem Titel : clipse of Reason9 in englischer Sprache erschien, ist ein Schlüsseltext der Kritischen Theorie. Entfaltet wird ein historischer Prozeß, der bereits in der thematisch eng verwandten : ialektik der Aufklärung9 rekonstruiert wurde: der Untergang einer als 'objektiv' begriffenen, wert- und zielsetzenden menschlichen Vernunft. An deren Stelle tritt eine rein formelle, auf bloße Effektivität gerichtete Vernunft, die jedes utopische Moment, jede aufs Ganze der Gesellschaft zielende Vorstellung von Glück als sinnlos erscheinen läßt. Was fortan zählt, ist die Beherrschung der Mittel, der Instrumente; und da 'instrumentelle' Vernunft gleichgültig bleibt gegen die Inhalte, auf die sie sich jeweils bezieht, wird ihr alles zum Instrument, die Natur ebenso wie der Mensch selbst. 'Die Maschine hat den Piloten abgeworfen; sie rast blind durch den Raum. Im Augenblick ihrer Vollendung ist Vernunft irrational und dumm geworden.' Im zweiten Teil von Band 6 der : esammelten Schriften9 sind späte Notizen und Aufzeichnungen wiedergegeben, die Horkheimer selbst aus einem wesentlich umfangreicheren Konvolut ausgewählt und noch kurz vor seinem Tod zur Publikation bestimmt hat (sie erschienen erstmals 1974). Die Form der unabgeschlossenen Notiz, die vom Zwang zum Systematischen entbindet, erlaubte Horkheimer Formulierungen von pointierter, noch heute verblüffender Schärfe, und sie wurde gerade darum zur kennzeichnenden Form seines späten Schaffens. Der Auflösungsprozeß der bürgerlichen Kultur, der Untergang ihrer kulturellen, moralischen und sozialen Formen unter der Herrschaft der instrumentellen Vernunft wird hier mit beispielloser zeitdiagnostischer Radikalität vor Augen gestellt.
