Ibunya, Adeline, yang tak mampu membiayainya saat dia berusia lima tahun, memberikannya kepada Aminah, perempuan Melayu yang banyak membantu keluarga mereka dan tak bisa memiliki anak sendiri. Bahkan, Adeline telah mengizinkan Maria diasuh secara Islam. Tumbuhlah Maria sebagai Nadra, gadis yang meski berparas Eropa, memiliki sifat dan kebiasaan seorang muslimah Melayu. Dia memiliki kehidupan yang tenang dan bahagia ketika orangtua kandungnya mencarinya, ingin mengklaim hak asuh atasnya kembali. Saat itu, di usia tiga belas tahun, Nadra yang baru saja menikah dengan pria pujaan hatinya, diperebutkan. Sidang demi sidang di pengadilan Singapura memicu banyak pihak bersimpati. Singapore’s Malay (Muslim) community, constituting about 15 per cent of the total population and constitutionally enshrined as the indigenous people of Singapore, have had its fair share of progress and problems in the history of this country. This academic initiative fills this obvious literature gap.
