Northern Ontario, January 1963. Weeks of violence and rising tension, mob mentality, and failures in leadership culminated in the Reesor Siding Tragedy: a shooting that took the lives of three strikers from the Spruce Falls Pulp and Paper Company and left eight wounded. In the political and legal aftermath, the details of the event were quickly covered up, leaving Canadians to forget about it—until now. Set against the backdrop of the harsh environment of the northern frontier, The Reesor Siding Tragedy: Canada’s Bloodiest Labour Conflict is a thrilling and thoroughly researched account of this important event in Ontario’s history. Charles A. Beaudoin unmasks the mishandling by the provincial government, police leadership, and union and Spruce Falls management that led to the lives of hardworking men who just wanted to earn a fair income being changed forever. As tensions and labour disputes rise again across North America, this book asks us to consider what happens when things go wrong—and how we can do better.

We live in the "New Age of Anxiety." Today we are all challenged by global warming, terrorism, job loss, and economic uncertainty. This stress lowers our resilience and we feel vulnerable. When personal crises and disasters get added to the mix the results can be traumatic. How do we cope? What actions can we take to best respond? How do we help our children, or the children in our care? How can we reestablish meaning in our lives? Using strategies learned and developed during 18 years on the frontlines, Dr. Johnson shows people how to manage their emotional reactions in an emergency, stabilize those around them, and gradually work through the lasting effects of crisis.

The Concept Of Tragedy written by Sam Han and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-03 with Social Science categories.

Events in the world today appear to be increasingly uncontrollable and unknowable. Climate change, refugee crises, and global pandemics seem to demonstrate the limits of human reason, science, and technology. In light of this, the terms "tragedy" and "tragic" have come into greater use. What does the register of the tragic do? What does its deployment in the contemporary context and other times of crisis mean? In addressing such questions, this book also argues for a "tragic vision" embedded in the history of social thought, demonstrating the relevance of the ancient tragedians and Aristotle as well as Shakespeare and modern dramatists to the most pressing questions of agency and collectivity in the social sciences. Developing a theory of "tragic social science," which is applied to topics including global inequality, celebrity culture, pandemics, and climate change, The Concept of Tragedy aims to restore "tragedy" as a productive analytic in the social sciences. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, social theory, media and communications, and literary criticism with interests in tragedy, suffering, and modernity.

A Beach Read for Political Junkies... The Tragedy of Hope and Change contains insights vital to understanding the changes progressive politics have added to our political landscape. A self-employed kayak guide, small business owner, and political junkie, Chris Warren explores both the workings of the 2008 presidential election, and the overt actions by Congress, as they pertain to middle class working Americans. Exploring everything from education to individual responsibility and even media bias, the Tragedy of Hope and Change will take you on a journey to discover how the broad brushstrokes of ambiguity progressives use to modify policy, can alter the Constitution of the United States, and forever destroy the freedoms we the electorate hold so dear.

From the time of Plato’s proposed expulsion of the poets, tragedy has repeatedly proposed a challenge to philosophical and theological certainties. This is apparent already in early Christianity amongst leading figures during the patristic age. But this raises the question: Why was the theme of tragedy still accepted and deployed throughout the history of Christianity nevertheless? Is this merely an accident or is there something more substantial at play? Can Christian theology take the tragic seriously? Must Christianity ultimately deny the tragic to be coherent, or might it be able to sustain its negativity? Some like George Steiner, David Bentley Hart, and John Milbank have doubts about such a coherency, but others think differently. This book aims to examine this debate, laying out the lines of disagreement and continuing tensions. Through a critical examination of the work of Donald MacKinnon and the eminent Christian thinker Rowan Williams, the book aims to show that there is a path for reconciling the claims of Christian orthodoxy and the experience of tragedy, one that is able to maintain a metaphysical foundation for both real transcendence and unfolding historicity, without denying either.
