The essays that Martha Halsey and Phyllis Zarlin have written and collected in this volume deal with plays and playwrights primarily and only incidentally with actors, producers, theater buildings, mime, and other such manifestations of the performing arts. The period the authors cover is from the 1940s to the present. The Spanish Civil War (1936-39) shattered theatrical life. After the conflict ended on April 1, 1939, the theater was barely nourished by recourse to its past. Then "the contemporary Spanish theater" began on a particular date: October 14, 1949. On that night a new playwright, Antonio Buero Vallejo, saw the first performance of his Historia de una escalera (Story of a Staircase) produced at the Teatro Español. It spoke deeply to Spanish audiences then, and instilled a new vitality into the Spanish theater and attracted to drama a new generation of playwrights. It is those writers and younger ones that have followed in their footsteps that are studied in this fine collection of essays. The distinguished editors introductory essay, "Is There Life after Lorca?" is a readable survey of the period, and it sets the tone for the following specialized essays by other authors and by themselves.

At the start of the twenty-first century, performances of early modern Spanish drama experienced resurgent popularity--not only in Spain but also on stages across Europe, Latin America, and the United States. In the academy the comedia, which includes comic, tragicomic, and tragic works, is widely taught in a range of contexts to a variety of students, in Spanish and in translation. Given the steady increase of Spanish as the language of choice in foreign language departments, these courses will continue to flourish. This volume offers guidance to teachers in helping students engage with and understand these late-sixteenth- and early-seventeenth-century works. Part 1, "Materials," evaluates editions and anthologies in English and Spanish; identifies important critical works and historical studies; and surveys illustrated books, films, and Internet resources. The Necropolitical Theater: Race and Immigration on the Contemporary Spanish Stage demonstrates how theatrical production in Spain since the early 1990s has reflected national anxieties about immigration and race. Jeffrey K. Coleman argues that Spain has developed a “necropolitical theater” that casts the non-European immigrant as fictionalized enemy—one whose nonwhiteness is incompatible with Spanish national identity and therefore poses a threat to the very Europeanness of Spain. The fate of the immigrant in the necropolitical theater is death, either physical or metaphysical, which preserves the status quo and provides catharsis for the spectator faced with the notion of racial diversity. Marginalization, forced assimilation, and physical death are outcomes suffered by Latin American, North African, and sub-Saharan African characters, respectively, and in these differential outcomes determined by skin color Coleman identifies an inherent racial hierarchy informed by the legacies of colonization and religious intolerance. Drawing on theatrical texts, performances, legal documents, interviews, and critical reviews, this book challenges Spanish theater to develop a new theatrical space. Jeffrey K. Coleman proposes a “convivial theater” that portrays immigrants as contributors to the Spanish state and better represents the multicultural reality of the nation today.
