Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 9, Babeș-Bolyai Universit, language: English, abstract: Sight is a leading theme in Romeo and Juliet and the frequent use of words relating to visual perception is not random or gratuitous. Therefore, the primary object of this thesis is demonstrating that beside the well-debated forces that govern the action there are others that may have been neglected. Precisely because readers may focus too much on the love story or on other outstanding elements of the play, such as the comic passages which stand in stark contrast with the tragic theme of the play, a considerable amount of intriguing aspects might escape our attention. These are subtle details, which serve a great purpose in the plot development. On many occasions vision becomes the cause of a series of events in the play. By this reflection on the faculty of seeing and the organ of visual perception I wish to consider closely these items that can be easily overlooked when dealing with the play. Owing to the fact that Romeo and Juliet is the best-known tragedy of Shakespeare, much has been written about it, mostly concerning the extent of the lovers' and the parents' culpability or destiny's role in contributing to the tragical ending.

The Comic Matrix Of Shakespeare S Tragedies written by Susan Snyder and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-29 with Literary Criticism categories.

Comic elements in Shakespeare's tragedies have often been noted, but while most critics have tended to concentrate on humorous interludes or on a single play, Susan Snyder seeks a more comprehensive understanding of how Shakespeare used the conventions, structures, and assumptions of comedy in his tragic writing. She argues that Shakespeare's early mastery of romantic comedy deeply influenced his tragedies both in dramaturgy and in the expression and development of his tragic vision. From this perspective she sheds new light on Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear. The author shows Shakespeare's tragic vision evolving as he moves through three possibilities: comedy and tragedy functioning first as polar opposites, later as two sides of the same coin, and finally as two elements in a single compound. In the four plays examined here, Professor Snyder finds that traditional comic structures and assumptions operate in several ways to shape the tragedy: they set up expectations which when proven false reinforce the movement into tragic inevitability; they underline tragic awareness by a pointed irrelevance; they establish a point of departure for tragedy when comedy's happy assumptions reveal their paradoxical "shadow" side; and they become part of the tragedy itself when the comic elements threaten the tragic hero with insignificance and absurdity. Susan Snyder is Professor of English at Swarthmore College. Originally published in 1979. The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. This second edition of Romeo and Juliet retains the text prepared by G. Blakemore Evans, together with his introduction and detailed textual notes. A thorough stage history features illustrations and photographs of notable performances from the eighteenth century onwards while a lucid commentary alerts the reader to the difficulties of language, thought and staging. For this second edition, Thomas Moisan has added a new introductory section which focuses on recent scholarly criticism and contemporary productions of the play. Battenhouse's Shakespearean tragedy: Its art and Christian premises, Irving Ribner's Patterns in Shakespearian tragedy, Virgil K. Whitaker's The mirror up to nature: The techniques of Shakespeare's tragedies, and Robert Grams Hunter's Shakespeare and the mystery of God's judgments. Waters questions, for example, Battenhouse's validity of Christian theological and didactic emphases on the old purgation theory of catharsis. His approach differs also from Northrop Frye's views on the tragedies in Northrop Frye on Shakespeare, an archetypal approach to representative plays including the tragedies.
