The great American Westerns can be profoundly meaningful when read metaphorically. More than mere shoot 'em up entertainment, they are an essential part of a vibrant, evolving national mythology. Like other versions of the archetypal Hero's Journey, these films are filled with insights about life, love, nature, society, ethics, beauty and what it means to be human, and are key to understanding American culture. Part film guide, part historical survey, this book explores the mythic and artistic elements in 52 great Westerns--some orthodox, some subversive--from the genre's first half-century. Each film is given detailed critical analysis, from the earliest silent movies to Golden Age classics like Red River (1948), High Noon (1952) and Shane (1953).

Peter Quince was a fighter born and bred. Orphaned at a young age, he remembered an old woman saying that he was a bad one and would cause a lot of trouble in the world. Others claimed he had bad blood and it would show up sooner or later. But Bill Andrews felt a connection with the boy, took him home and raised him as one of his own despite his wife's misgivings. Peter soon learned he could manipulate people by withholding his true feelings-showing and telling them what they wanted to see and hear. Peter had learned that battles should be won by cunning and strength, with cunning being far more important. But when he beat his foster brother in a fight over a girl named Mary, Peter knew it was time to strike out on his own. In his travels he would seek out those with skills he needed and learn from them until he was able to master his teacher. At barely twenty, he had a price on his head for shooting a man in self-defense. As he outsmarted lawmen in five states and territories, the bounty rose to over $100,000. He finally fled to Mexico, but there he would fall into trouble again with a wealthy land baron, a beautiful woman, and a notorious bandit.

"Reflections Of A 'B' Movie Junkie" is a tribute to the old "B" Movies of the Saturday Matinees of yesteryear. Actually, it is more of a homage to them, or at least (6) genres of those film types, that were so prevalent back in primarily the '40's and '50's. Their research and discussion, however, in some instances, dates all the way back to the beginning of the "talkies" of motion picture content, and can extend in the other direction, into the early '70s. These (6) genres include the popular "B"-Western, The Comedy Teams, The Jungle Adventures, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Horror and the Serial, or Chapter Plays, so popular with the week-end Matinee crowds back then. These film-types filled up our Saturday afternoons (and evenings) with exciting adventure, curious wonder, spine-tingling horror, and non-stop action. Often filmed on a shoe-string budget, and in a limited time-frame, many of these "classics" came to be looked upon by many fans as being so truly bad, that they were good, (in a bad sort of way) ! They are thus categorized, reviewed and discussed, for the most part, in a lovingly personal style, especially when compared to the film types we are subjected to in today's market. They had their place in film history, and that time is long since gone. But, for some of us, they have never been equaled, which, for others, may indeed be a good thing.

By the time Stagecoach made John Wayne a silver-screen star in 1939, the thirty-one-year-old was already a veteran of more than sixty films, having twirled six-guns and foiled cattle rustlers in B Westerns for five studios. By the 1950s he was Hollywood’s most popular actor—an Academy Award nominee destined to become an American icon. Through previously unpublished photographs and revealing family anecdotes, The Young Duke offers an unflinching look at how Marion Morrison became the legend known as John Wayne—from his boyhood in Winterset, Iowa, to his days as a college football star, to his stunning box-office success in Westerns and war movies in the 1930s and 1940s. Shedding new light on Wayne’s formative years and early Hollywood roles and influences, this biography uncovers the true stories behind the screen legend’s public and private lives.
