As part of a series of studies concerning training in the solution of naval maneuvering problems, an analysis was made of errors committed by college students while solving change-of-station problems. One approach was a detailed classification of errors made on a final examination; another consisted of five short tests of the separate problem solution steps. Plotting, especially in the context of actual problems, was the major source of errors. There also were a large number of errors related to the use of the logarithmic time, speed, and distance scale. Measuring errors were relatively infrequent. Although the data are not completely consistent, there is an indication that the use of the guide as the reference ship for solving change-of-station problems is less prone to several types of errors than is the use of own ship. Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Braunschweig (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: Foreign Language Pedagogy (FLP), in general, aims to convey to teachers the essential information about the role of the learner and the teacher in the process of language learning, and also provides them with theoretical, didactic methods and practical means for the foreign language classroom (FLC). We can even go a step further by claiming that the mission of FLP is to research for and establish the supreme way of a teaching a foreign language (FL) to the learners. However, within this field of research it becomes quite obvious that the learners take in a rather passive role and do not contribute very much to new research data and, hence, new approaches towards foreign language teaching (FLT). This thesis can be held true, to give just one example, when we consider the various teaching methods for the FLC. Although the role of the learner is taken into account in each method, the learners are fairly more than “testing objects” of teaching models hypothesized by didactic scientists. On the other hand, one must admit that in correspondence with the recent emergence and establishment of the communicative approach (CA), the learners preferences and demands have been taken far more into consideration and their linguistic and communicative performance serve as source for methodological research input and constructive, teacher strategies-oriented as well as learner strategies-oriented output offered by science. Recently, and paradoxically enough, it can be perceived intensive discussion concerning the question how to deal best with errors produced by learners. More precisely, there has been a shift from the formerly applied “Contrastive Analysis” (CAH) toward the occupation with “Error Analysis” (EA). (...)

This study investigated an alternative training approach that would improve transfer performance scores above traditional training approaches. Specifically, error-management training was proposed to help trainees learn complex tasks, as opposed to error-avoidant training approaches, which sought to give trainees step-by-step protocols for learning that would minimize the occurrence of errors during training. This study was designed to examine the effects of training type on transfer performance and transfer errors, as well as the effects of meta-cognition, emotion control and cognitive appraisals as mediators of the training type-performance relationship. A third issue of this study investigated the personality-training type interactions from a situation strength perspective. Participants (N = 181) from a Midwestern university completed four training trials and two transfer trials of a computerized version of a class scheduling task and completed surveys of relevant constructs. Results revealed that training type did not have an effect on transfer performance or errors, training type did not predict meta-cognition, emotion control and challenge appraisals, but did predict threat appraisals. Finally, personality did not have a main effect on performance, nor did it interact with training type. The relative contributions of this study was the effects of training type on cognitive appraisals (threat in particular) and its relevance for future theoretical frameworks of error management training research, the effects of training type on error attitudes and error attitude effects on performance. Previous operationializations of error management training also may not be as clear-cut as once thought.

A curious ambiguity surrounds errors in professional working contexts: they must be avoided in case they lead to adverse (and potentially disastrous) results, yet they also hold the key to improving our knowledge and procedures.
