He presented in his "Traite de Dynamique," the first treatise on Analytical Mechanics. When this had been done the way was prepared for a complete exhaustive treatment of the entire domain of Mechanics by the Analytical method. Although it is probable that Newton used his method of fluxions or calculus in arriving at the ideas set forth in the Principia, still he presented them in geometrical form. Even so, it was some fifty years before they were accepted and assimilated. The next big step in advance was to be the full and complete development of mechanics by the analytical method based on Newton's laws. It was necessary first that the calculus and its notation should be perfected and that its use and value in problems of mechanics should come to be recognized. The labors of Leibnitz, the Bernoullis and Euler brought this to pass. Secondly it was necessary that, the co-ordinate method should be developed.
