O livro Conflitos territoriais e identitários da comunidade quilombola Onze Negras — Cabo de Santo Agostinho/PE lança um olhar geográfico sobre o debate das comunidades quilombolas no Brasil. A obra propõe fazer uma ressignificação do conceito dessas comunidades, atualizando-o e colocando a temática na atualidade. A Geografia tem muito a contribuir e esta obra mostrou a importância, por exemplo, do mapeamento das comunidades quilombolas no contexto metropolitano, já que o quilombo, pelo senso comum, está associado a comunidades rurais. A identidade é um elemento crucial para entender a diferença existente entre os modos de vida quilombolas. O conceito de identidade está diretamente ligado ao território e isso faz com que haja a compreensão da flexibilidade do referido conceito, auxiliando na interpretação da sociedade contemporânea e na forma como os quilombolas estão inseridos nela. E mesmo assim, há fragilidades na questão legislativa e isso resulta num constante desafio para as comunidades quilombolas brasileiras, em que muitas ainda lutam pelo direito ao território e pelo reconhecimento enquanto sujeitos de direito. Embora sejam atreladas ao passado, as comunidades são presentes e atuantes, no entanto, ainda são dotadas de vulnerabilidade e, embora sejam consideradas símbolos de resistência, ainda lutam por condições mínimas de sobrevivência. E na busca dessa sobrevivência tentam se reinventar por meio das tradições ainda mantidas, e ainda assim precisam afirmar a todo o instante a sua identidade.
