René Girard ha sviluppato ormai da molti anni una teoria della società e della violenza che ha mostrato una grande forza ermeneutica, applicandosi via via, e sempre con risultati illuminanti, a materiali antropologici, alla tragedia greca e infine ai testi evangelici. Ed era quasi inevitabile che Girard mettesse il suo pensiero alla prova su Shakespeare, poiché nulla come Shakespeare dà l’impressione di una realtà totale e proteiforme, che sfugge beffardamente a ogni tentativo di definizione. E così è senz’altro – ma è vero anche, come questo libro documenta in modo stringente, che Shakespeare è il più ricco laboratorio dove osservare le categorie elaborate da Girard nel loro peculiare movimento: quella spirale che, a partire dal desiderio dell’essere di un altro (il "desiderio mimetico"), innesca un conflitto la cui violenza è domata solo sporadicamente mediante il sacrificio di una vittima designata, il "capro espiatorio". Attraversando l’intera opera di Shakespeare, da una commedia giovanile poco frequentata dalla critica quale "I due gentiluomini di Verona" a opere capitali come "Sogno di una notte di mezza estate", "Giulio Cesare" e "Troilo e Cressida", fino agli esiti tardi e supremi del "Racconto d’inverno" e della "Tempesta", Girard ha ritrovato in tutti i suoi ingannevoli meandri la drammaturgia del conflitto mimetico, che ha al suo centro il peccato più inconfessabile: l’invidia. Il risultato è doppiamente felice: da un lato la teoria di Girard si riveste del sontuoso tessuto della parola shakespeariana, dall’altro il testo di Shakespeare, crivellato da secoli di glosse critiche, conferma la sua inesauribilità, rivelando scorci, strutture e prospettive sconvolgenti che la critica anteriore non aveva saputo percepire.
