Spiritual Psychology is the study and practice of the art and science of the human evolution of consciousness. The heart occupies an important place in Sufism and is considered to contain the divine spark that leads to spiritual realization. Fethullah Gulen's action-oriented Sufi methods described in his book series "The Emerald Hills of the Heart" provides the basis for a heart-based therapeutic intervention through self-journeying, which is the objective of this work. These self-purification and mindfulness-related transpersonal methods generate a form of treatment that is culturally sensitive. Through my reflections in this research, I transformed my personal experiences into a transpersonal narrative by writing 80 poems in 80 days, and this output, along with Gulen's teaching methods, techniques and spiritual practices formed the source of my intellectually generated data, and the basis for the new therapy model. This work presents my journey in Fethullah Gulen's Sufi path and an emerging model for a heart-based Sufi mindfulness spiritual practice. In this research, I propose a faith/spirituality-based model of heart-centred psychotherapy rooted in the spiritual philosophy.

Musical Sincerity and Transcendence in Film focuses on the ways filmmakers treat music reflexively—that is, draw attention to what it is and what it can do. Examining a wide range of movies from the last thirty-five years including examples from Indiewood, teen film, and blockbuster cinema. The book explores two recurring ideas about music implied by foregrounded musical activity on screen: that music can be a potent means of sincere expression and genuine human connection and that music can enable transcendence of disenchantment and the mundane. The book covers eclectic critical terrain to highlight various layers of musical sincerity and transcendence in film, including the nineteenth-century aesthetics of E.T.A. Hoffmann, David Foster Wallace’s literary resistance to irony (sometimes called the New Sincerity), strategies of self-revelation in singer-songwriter repertoires, Lionel Trilling’s distinction between sincerity and authenticity, theories of play, David Nye’s notion of the American technological sublime, and Svetlana Boym’s writings on nostalgia. These lenses reveal that film is a way of perpetuating, revising, and critiquing ideas about music and that music in film is a potent means of exploring broader social, emotional, and spiritual desires.

David Foster Wallace's interest in the duality of irony and sincerity as both a philosophical and literary problem is especially apparent in his 1996 novel Infinite Jest. Responding to the shortcomings of postmodern fiction critically, Wallace's essay, "E Unibus Pluram," calls for the American literary movement New Sincerity, or post-postmodernism, to provide a viable alternative to the ironic mode's greater existential entrapments. Several scholars have commented on New Sincerity's presence within Infinite Jest, and a consensus suggests that the movement manifests itself in Wallace's general tone--or, as Adam Kelly's scholarship notes, in Wallace's "regular thematic treatment of sincerity". I continue this conversation with a greater focus on characterization, suggesting that the narratives of protagonists Hal Incandenza and Don Gately embody, respectively, the duality of irony and sincerity. Infinite Jest, I contend, successfully uses fiction as a literary medium to engage a philosophical discussion because Wallace offers us characters who are larger than themselves, who embody ideas beyond the novel's invented world. Ultimately, I believe that conversations regarding irony's shortcomings promote the relevance of community and defend the validity of human pain--while also offering us hope: We can transcend adversity. We can find meaning by choosing to cultivate mental discipline for the sake of empathy and altruism.

Following East and West German police officers on their patrols through the newly-united city of Berlin and observing how they make sense of one another in a fast-changing environment, Andreas Glaeser explains how East-West boundaries have been maintained by the interactions of institutions, practices, and cultural forms-including diverging patterns of understanding rooted in vastly different social systems, readily revived Cold War images, the continuing search for an adequate response to Germany's Nazi past, and the politics and organization of unification, which impose highly asymmetrical burdens on east and west.
