Espectadores y críticos denuncian de forma creciente el deterioro de la calidad de los contenidos televisivos. La búsqueda de audiencia a cualquier precio hace que las pantallas se llenen de asuntos triviales e incluso nocivos para la «salud» cultural de los ciudadanos. La información y la cultura pasan a ser simples mercancías y los programas se llenan de personajes con pobres horizontes intelectuales que promueven contravalores. La llamada «tele-basura» alcanza en España enormes dimensiones y tiene como pilares fundamentales los programas sobre el «mundo del corazón» y la «telerealidad», en los que suele imperar la falta de respeto a los principios deontológicos tradicionales del periodismo. Este libro recoge las reflexiones de medio centenar de expertos en esta materia, participantes en la primera edición del foro de debate «Transformar la televisión», una iniciativa del festival Urban TV (www.urbantvfestival.org), auspiciada por La Casa Encendida, de la Obra Social de Caja Madrid. Sus aportaciones se publican ahora, con la esperanza de que sirvan de modesta semilla de la que un día pueda surgir una nueva televisión, que supere las múltiples carencias actuales y sirva para satisfacer verdaderamente las aspiraciones informativas, culturales y artísticas de los ciudadanos. Bienvenido León es periodista, doctor en Ciencias de la Información y profesor de Producción Televisiva y Divulgación Científica Audiovisual en la Universidad de Navarra. También imparte habitualmente cursos en otras universidades y centros educativos de España, Portugal, Grecia, Argentina, Costa Rica y Ecuador. Es autor de los libros El documental de divulgación científica (Paidós, 1999), traducido al inglés por Pantaneto Press (2007) y al portugués por Cine-clube Avanca (2001), y Dirección de documentales (Eunsa, 2008). También ha publicado numerosos artículos científicos sobre comunicación, en revistas españolas y extranjeras. Es fundador y director de los festivales Urban TV (www.urbantvfestival.org) y Tele- Natura (www.unav.es/telenatura). Anteriormente fue director de informativos de la agencia Editmedia TV, coordinador de reportajes informativos de Tele 5 y director de la productora Euroview.

Ahora ya sabemos que la televisión tiene mejor salud que la diagnosticada por diferentes enterradores y alarmistas. Mientras los espectadores han seguido aumentando en todos los países, la ola tecnológica no ha sofocado a la televisión sino que esta ha sabido aprovechar el impulso de la corriente para adaptarse rápidamente a los nuevos espectadores, plataformas y pantallas. El objetivo principal de este libro es ofrecer una valoración internacional y de conjunto sobre el cambio de modelo de televisión y la convergencia con Internet. Los diversos capítulos de este libro se ocupan principalmente de dos temas que abarcan con una mirada comparativa y de conjunto España, Europa e Iberoamérica. En primer lugar se analiza el definitivo cambio de sistema de financiación de la televisión que coincide con la introducción de la TDT y la crisis económica en Europa, especialmente importante en España. Las expectativas sobre la introducción de la televisión digital se han visto frustradas nada más comenzar la migración. Por otro lado debe tenerse en cuenta la aceleración de la era transmedia que aparece como una verdadera alternativa al modelo tradicional de consumo de la televisión. La potenciación de las redes sociales ha permitido la aceleración de un nuevo tipo de producción individual y amateur de ficción aplicando una tecnología ligera y una economía mínima. La irrupción de la social televisión que potencia la relación TV-Twitter, junto con las webseries o webnovelas, está teniendo un éxito enorme de fans en las redes sociales; las cuales, además, son utilizadas como dispositivos de pretexto para la comunicación, así como de reconocimiento y de identidad del usuario.
