With rapid urbanization and the declining marine fishery, a large number of Chinese coastal fishing villages have transformed into new fishing villages with new industrial structures. Attempting to reveal the process and mechanism of fishing villages' revitalization driven by industrial transformation, this paper makes the definitions of four typical fishing village transformation types, i.e., modern fishery-dominated village type (MFT), fishing products process dominated type (FPT), and fishing village tourism dominated type (FTT), and balanced development village type (BDT), and takes four typical transformed coastal fishing villages in Qingdao New Area as our research objects. Based on field observation and comparison of typical transformed fishing villages, this paper explores how industrial transformation enhances the development of coastal fishing villages and what makes better industrial transformation in these villages. More importantly, the findings from these four different transformed cases illustrate how government, village elites, public participatory, enterprises, the cultural and technological creativity can promote village revitalization. This study could help better understand the development process and different driving forces functions in the process of industrial transformation in coastal fishing villages.

An increase in the number of fishers as a result of population growth and migration to coastal fishing communities can be a contributing factor in the overexploitation of fisheries resources and the deterioration of the coastal envrionment. The findings of the development dynamics of rural fishing communities "suggest that contrary to the assumed global trend, the number of coastal fishers has started to decline or stagnate in recent years in some developing countries. The findings further suggest that artisanal fisheries no longer are a "last resort employment" for people in some coastal areas.

A Shifting Shore written by Alice Garner and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-05 with History categories.

How does tourism transform fishing communities into vibrant resorts, working shores into bathing beaches? In A Shifting Shore, Alice Garner traces the ways fisherfolk, bathers, investors, and engineers understood, claimed, and remade the shores of the Bassin d'Arcachon, a prime fishing and oyster-farming site in southwestern France, over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Garner's interest in the coastline—a zone that resists all attempts at definition—shapes this generously illustrated book. Rather than taking a straightforward chronological approach to the settlement and evolution of the towns of Arcachon and La Teste, Garner investigates the development of the Bassin d'Arcachon's southern shores with the aim of recovering something of the "lived space" experienced by locals and visitors. Drawing on guidebooks, newspapers, bylaws, engineers' reports, medical pamphlets, postcards, and the accounts of literary-minded holidaymakers, Garner shows how investors and developers transformed Arcachon and its community—beaches were rezoned and jetties constructed to favor bathers, and a new railway line brought ever-increasing numbers of visitors to the area. She explores how fishermen and women resisted developments that threatened their livelihood or their particular sense of belonging, and shows how they adapted to the changing environment and to their new roles as guides and entertainers. A Shifting Shore, while anchored in Arcachon and La Teste, has much to contribute to a nuanced understanding of relations between hosts and guests in any community.

"This remarkable study of Nazaré, a Portuguese fishing community, is much more than an ethnography of small, "traditional" village. It is an analysis of styles of social relationship that appear to have been in force in greater Europe before the rise of capitalism and industrial civilization"--A prebureaucractic style"--Page vi

The Argobba are an ethnic and religious minority in southeastern Wallo and northeastern Sawa. Despite living in harsh environments and menace from more dominant ethnic groups, they have for centuries maintained their agricultural activity, trader and weaver identity, and religious unity. At present they are undergoing rapid cultural change, and are caught up in a tension between encapsulation and the struggle for the survival of Argobba cultural tradition and political position in what once was a strategic location. This book presents a perceptive historical and cultural analysis of change and continuity, looks at how the Argobba define and redefine their agricultural and commercial ways of living as a response to threats from Oromo migration, Amhara settler penetration and Adal aggression, and examines the past and present condition of Argobba social and economic transformation in north-central Ethiopia.

The present study seeks to emphasize the condition of fishermen of some select districts of Bengal. Covering the entire colonial and post-colonial period the study identifies the significant changes that have taken place among the fisher folk. Migration, improved communication, occupational diversification, urbanization, and education have admittedly brought about changes in their mindset, which in turn has affected the structure of the fishermen community. The study attempts to trace the origin of the fishing community and reflect on the physical characteristics of the fishermen settlement and topography of the land of their operation as well as the historical development pertaining to it. It also tries to show the changes in the cultural concept of the community over a period of long historical time. It has shown how the penetration of merchant capital accentuated increasing exploitation of water resources vis-a-vis the life of the fishing community. It has looked into the roles of the colonial and the post-colonial state in shaping the life of Bengal fishermen and fisheries as also the changes in cultural concepts of the community—the transformation from fishermen to trader, businessmen or cultivator as is reflected in the social geography, social mobility and social structure in their spatial location. The advantage of western education and adoption of new technology have influenced the fishermen community. This has resulted in a ‘class within a class’ and the loss of roots of their traditional culture. This transition to modern times spanning through 19th and 20th centuries constitutes a stuff that informs the core of this book, addressed in an anthropo-historical perspective.
