It is, at its least, a call to thought and an aid to thinkers. With the materials I have amassed, and now put at their disposal, it would be strange if other students did not go much further than I have. To such I leave many a problem arising on the face of those materials that I have not been able to solve, and many others I have not even attempted to assail. Most of the conclusions reached have followed after the putting on paper of the facts which are their grounds, and the most important theory I have put forward is quite opposed to my former preconceptions, quite different from anything I had an idea of in the beginning. More than a half century ago there came to my knowledge a series of strange occurrences just like those which a few years afterwards disturbed the quiet of the village of Hydesville, and which are at this time disturbing the quiet of scientific people the world over. From that time to this I have been an observer of such things and all other phenomena of occult origin. English summary: The concept of the church underwent a transformation in the early Enlightenment when two horizons were broadened, one beyond the boundaries of theology and one within them. As a result, the dogmatic concept of church expanded and ecclesiology was addressed outside of dogmatic theology. German description: Die Transformation des Kirchenbegriffs in der Fruhaufklarung vollzog sich in Form einer doppelten Horizontuberschreitung zum einen uber die Grenzen der Theologie hinaus und zum anderen innerhalb dieser. Die Offnung der ekklesiologischen Debatte ausserhalb der Theologie fuhrte zur Ethisierung und Universalisierung des Kirchenbegriffs verbunden mit dem Aufkommen einer Kultur der religiosen Mundigkeit des Laien. Auf der Suche nach einem allgemeineren Begrundungszusammenhang ruckte der Kirchenbegriff in den Fokus von Naturrecht und Religionstheorie. Die Etablierung des Territorial- und Kollegialsystem brachte die vorlaufige Klarung und Regelung des Verhaltnisses von Kirche und Staat. In Reaktion auf die Transformation des Kirchenbegriffs ausserhalb der Theologie kam es erst relativ spat zur Transformation innerhalb dieser. Die Folge war eine Erweiterung des dogmatischen Kirchenbegriffs und die Thematisierung der Ekklesiologie ausserhalb der Dogmatik.
