This is a study of women's transformative leadership in three periods of Nigeria's history, the precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial, through researching the context of women's political and economic agency within two communities in Nigeria. In particular this inquiry seeks to understand the interconnection of identities with the power structure of the communities and the impact of rigid gender construction on women's agency. This dissertation posits peace building as a transformative leadership process through which women are deconstructing and reconstructing gender discourse and building resilient communities. Transformative leadership is discussed and explored in this inquiry as a creative process through which women peace-builders provide alternative solutions to development challenges. The research looks at the ways women peace-builders in conflict and postconflict societies in two communities across Nigeria are reframing their identities and reintegrating their history by cultural translations of international political frameworks. This study answers the following research question: How is the transformative leadership of Nigerian women influenced by the multiple identities of the women in relation to the power structures in the society? Situated in a postcolonial narrative that is grounded in the experiences of Nigerian women as narrated by Nigerian women, this dissertation seeks to understand (a) the intersections of African women's identities with the power structure by studying Nigerian women peace-builders and (b) the impacts of these intersections on the transformative leadership style of the women in conflict and postconflict societies. I used postcolonial indigenous feminist methodologies for my research. I find the methods of postcolonial indigenous interviews and focused group discussions appropriate for data collection as it speaks to the realities of the Nigerian women.

The book explains an unexpected consequence of the decrease in conflict in Africa after the 1990s. Analysis of cross-national data and in-depth comparisons of case studies of Uganda, Liberia and Angola show that post-conflict countries have significantly higher rates of women's political representation in legislatures and government compared with countries that have not undergone major conflict. They have also passed more legislative reforms and made more constitutional changes relating to women's rights. The rational for this study is to verify whether the women of the study area participates in conflict resolution, the strategies and the cultural barriers, if any, that militates against their participation in conflict resolution and peace process in the area as well to identifying whether they are fully integrated in the decision making processes and institutions in the area. Data used in this work are from primary sources. Survey method of quantitative research was used during the study; Questionnaire/Oral Interview was used to collect data from the population of study while probability sampling method was also used to represent the population of Study. The work finds that the women of the study area participating in conflict resolution through the institutions of Umuada, Extended Family Wives Association, Christian Mothers Union and Community Women Association and that they make use of strategies such as mediation, arbitration, good office conciliation, and traditional methods like oath taking, marriage, covenant and ritual among others. Also there are some cultural barriers militating against them in this regards. The work also finds that women of the area are marginalized in both elective and appointive positions and thus underrepresented in the decision making organs and institutions for peace in the Local Government and beyond including the communities in the area etc. The work thereafter recommends among others that all the cultural barriers that forbid women’s inclusion or membership of decision making institutions for peace in the area and beyond should be removed, women’s marginalization as well as lack of gender mainstreaming in the area should be addressed in the spirit of the United Nation Security Council Resolution 1325 of 2000.

The book analyses the two decades of the brutal civil war of northern Uganda. The author modified Lederach's peacebuilding framework to include peacemaking to bring out the argument that women and men make significant contributions to the peace processes and point out women’s position as top leadership actors. The book uncovers the under-emphasised role of women in peacemaking and building. From grassroots to national level, women were found to have organised themselves and assumed roles as advocates, negotiators and mobilisers. The actions by women became evident at the stalemated Juba peace talks when women presented the Peace Torch to the peace negotiating teams who on the occasion shook hands for the first time and peace was ushered in. Their initiatives and non-violent actions offer lessons to resolve civil conflicts in Africa. The book recommends that women should undergo relevant training in times of peace as this would make them more effective in times of need.
