En la primera década del siglo XXI han tenido lugar dos procesos de enorme importancia en España, uno demográfico, relacionado con la enorme llegada de inmigrantes al país, y otro económico, marcado por la irrupción de una fuerte crisis económica en 2008. La juventud del fenómeno inmigratorio, el rápido incremento de este colectivo respecto al total de la población y el cambio de fase del ciclo económico convierten a España en un caso de extraordinario interés científico. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es estudiar la desigualdad laboral en términos de empleo de la población extranjera en España. Los principales resultados de esta investigación son tres. En primer lugar, aunque algunas diferencias relacionadas con características socio-demográficas explican buena parte de la brecha entre los dos grupos, tanto el estatus profesional como la trayectoria laboral previa tienen una influencia notable sobre las oportunidades de empleo de los individuos. En segundo lugar, la llegada de la fase recesiva del ciclo económico ha tenido un efecto negativo neto superior sobre la población inmigrante que sobre la autóctona. Es decir, la desigualdad se incrementa a partir de 2008, y en el caso de que los extranjeros estuvieran mejor posicionados inicialmente, su ventaja se reduce en favor de los españoles. Y por último, una vez controlados diversos factores relacionados tanto con las características personales como con la posición de los individuos en el mercado laboral, la nacionalidad continúa siendo un factor relevante a la hora de determinar las oportunidades de trabajo de las personas, lo cual pone en duda la tesis de la asimilación.

En primer lugar, se quiere saber si los trabajadores inmigrantes experimentan algún tipo de desventaja respecto a autóctonos, y si fuera así, averiguar las principales causas. Y en segundo lugar, comprobar el impacto neto que ha tenido la Gran Recesión sobre la posible brecha entre ambos colectivos. Los principales resultados de este proyecto de investigación son tres.
