Successful transition from school to adult life has always been difficult for people with disabilities, especially in the area of employment. The vast majority of people with disabilities are either unemployed or underemployed with low wages and few benefits, and many governments are struggling to find a way of providing employment and benefits to people with disabilities without creating disincentives to work. This book provides strategies and ideas for improving the lives of people with disabilities, exploring new ways of enabling a successful transition to an integrated adult working life by providing effective instruction and support. Following an introduction which outlines the importance of transition services and meaningful outcomes, topics covered in the remaining chapters include: Person Centered Transition Planning; Enhancing Competence and Independence; Employment Assessment and Career Development; Collaboration between Agencies for a Seamless Transition; Independent Living and Supported Living; and Community Functioning Skills. The book will be of interest to all those who work with transition age students as well as those who work with adults with disabilities and want to enable them to have the best life possible. To paraphrase Helen Keller "people with disabilities not only need to be given lives, they need to be given lives worth living."

In the past decade or so, scholars in the United States have identified the emergence of a new, distinct stage of life, as adolescence has become protracted, and most young people of recent generations take longer to achieve economic and psychological autonomy than they did a half century ago. This new life stage, in between adolescence and adulthood when young people are in a semiautonomous state, has come to be known as "early adulthood." Main characteristics of this new life stage include a later entry into the work force, a longer period of time living in the natal home, and a delayed age at marriage and childbearing. These trends not only have profound implications for young adults' well-being and intergenerational relationships but also challenge social institutions, such as family, schools, labor markets, and many youth-serving institutions.

The transition to adulthood involves, for most individuals, moving from school to work, establishment of long-term relationships, possibly parenting, and a number of other psychosocial transformations. Now more than ever, there is a concern within popular and research literature about children growing up too soon or too late or failing to realize changes associated with being adult. With this in mind, the book intends to answer a series of timely questions in regard to transition to adulthood and propose a wholly new approach to counseling that enables youth to engage fully in their lives and achieve their best. Active Transition to Adulthood: A New Approach for Counseling will discuss the authors’ work on the transition to adulthood (including early and late adolescence) from an entirely innovative perspective – action theory. Over a period of 10-15 years the authors have collected substantial data on adolescents and youth in transition, and will present an approach to counseling based on these data and cases. The action theory perspective in which the authors have grounded their work addresses the intentional, goal-directed behavior of persons and groups that is expressed through particular actions, longer-term projects, and life-encompassing careers. In this book, both transition to adulthood and counseling will be covered in the language of goal-directed action. In this way both transition and counseling reflect and capture the action, projects, and careers in which families, youth, and clients are engaged and use to construct on-going identity and other narratives.

The narrative inquiry research study proposal presented the problem: If the transition of students with disabilities into adulthood is deemed to be important to the educational system and to society, then follow-up studies of these students are essential to assessing their success. Using an interview guide adapted from the National Center on Secondary Education and Transition, special education students and their parents who graduated from a Northern Idaho high school were interviewed. Employment, services needed and received, and quality of life indicators of these students were discussed in descriptive form. Literature review revealed that legislation has mandated that transition planning for special education students be implemented. Success for students after high school graduation is questionable, and many factors determine their success. The study found that students with disabilities were presented with many challenges. The study found that there were many factors that influenced their success in transitioning into adult living. The remediation they received in the special education classroom, as well as the special education support they received in the general education setting was helpful in helping the students to compensate and remediate their areas of disabilities. Vocational classes and job shadowing helped them to explore different careers and interests, and helped develop the students' self-esteem. Individual teachers who expressed interest in them and gave the students help and support were recognized by the participants as an influential part of their transition. The Individual Education Plan and transition plan helped the student, parent(s) and school work together as a team toward the common good of the student. Community and state resources were accessed and utilized by participants once they graduated from high school.
