That there is diversity in the work and retirement behaviors and at titudes of our small-town respondents is obvious. Thus, attempts to legislate broad solutions to problems of Social Security and other factors of most interest to older persons can be assured of having both supporters and detractors among the elderly in rural settings as well as among other age groups. Within the diversity observed, how ever, are some results requiring further attention. The relatively positive adjustment to not working of the retired men in the study bodes well for those expecting to leave the work force in the next few years. This positive adjustment mirrors that observed in several other recent studies, of course. Still, those not making positive adjustments must be considered; they will continue to require the attention of various support services so that attempts to solve their problems will be successful. Equally significant is the fact that no clear picture of the work and retirement orientation of these rural men emerged. On the one hand, they were remaining in the labor force slightly longer than men in urban 67 68 LATER LIFE TRANSITIONS samples and the job satisfaction and preferred retirement age for men still working had increased over the decade. On the other hand, the value placed on work had decreased, attitudes toward retirement had become more positive, and the men were more work than non work oriented.

In the face of normative age-related declines in health and mobility, increasing numbers of older adults are considering self-care accommodation within the context of a retirement community as a mechanism to maintain independence. Whilst the benefits of down-sizing in older age are well established, relocation to a retirement community offers the additional provision of a) facilities to cater for current and anticipated future healthcare needs; b) general household maintenance and/or cleaning services; c) the security of an enclosed complex that increases older adults' sense of physical safety; and d) a close and supportive community network that reduces social isolation. The present study employed a prospective longitudinal design to examine the adaptation of 83 older Australians (aged 57 to 90 years) to independent living units within a retirement village over a 12 month period. A number of health, subjective well-being, and social network outcomes are examined. Comparisons are made with a sample of community-dwelling older adults of the same age. A promising indicator of the decision to relocate as a positive life change, results indicate that 12-months post-relocation, those who relocated to the village rated the environment as more positive than their pre-move residence. A reduction in perceived loneliness and an increase in neighbour social networks were then found to be the most significant benefits to relocation. Characteristics of those older adults likely to adapt best to living in a retirement village were dependent largely on the outcome in question. Contextual factors associated with the move, physical health, personality characteristics, and perceived control each contributed to adjustment.This investigation of the impact of relocationtoa retirement village on the social networks and well-being of older adults provides an important contribution to our understanding of the needs and experiences of our ageing community. Both government policy and aged care providers should benefit from monitoring and continued improvement of housing options for older adults. Through indentifying the needs and experiences of our older population, along with the factors characterizing successful transition, we can strive to ensure that relocation performed either out of preference or necessity is a positive experience and a step toward continued healthy ageing.

The purpose of this study was to capture participants' descriptions of factors and identification of turning points that profoundly influenced their later life career transition paths. The study sample consisted of 10 individuals age 55 or older with stories of engagement in later life career transitions. Volunteer participants had connections with career transition courses at Marylhurst University or Life by Design NW (Portland Community College). Qualitative method using narrative design allowed interpretation of meanings that surrounded participants' transition factors and turning points, as described in participants' stories of their lived transition experiences. Constructionist perspectives recognized the narrative was a joint construction between listener and teller and the story could be told differently in diverse contexts. Story construction was based on interviews with each participant, with these interviews creating a narrative text. The constructionist approach suggested that apart from personal reflections, socializing influences shaped participants' narratives. Factors of particular significance included age, health, education, work, economics, family, key people, emotions, and older adult stereotypes. The study concluded that descriptive turning points represented transformational catalysts, pivoting around life changes and events, a sense of calling, and epiphanies. Discovery of flow, acceptance of low points, and understanding of life's frailties allowed participants to reconcile fears and external circumstances so they could embrace their passions for work and celebrate their worth and wisdom -- making meaningful contributions to society. Methodology and purpose of this study combined elements not similarly combined in other studies found in literature, giving heightened significance to study's results. Timing was a substantive aspect of this study's relevance, as many in our society -- including the influx of Baby Boomers currently reaching retirement age -- were experiencing factors and turning points explored in this study.
