This volume analyses the phenomenon of the thefts of sacred relics in Medieval Italy, in particular through the stealthy translationes, the hagiographic stories narrating the transfer of the relics from one place to another after they were stolen. Thanks to the study of historical contexts, narrative dynamics, literary themes and anthropological aspects, the book attempts to reconstruct the richness and complexity of the phenomenon over the centuries, tracing the history of this specific aspect of the cult of saints, which is also the history of the culture and religious imagery of the Middle Ages.

Ippolito II d’Este (1509-1572), cardinal and prince of Ferrara, played a crucial role in shaping the political and cultural connections between Italy and France. Seen by his contemporaries as staunchly ‘French’, his life rather followed a difficult balance between the political and spatial entities – Rome, Paris, and Ferrara – through which he continuously moved and from which he derived his power. Following his career as cardinal protector of the Valois crown, royal administrator of Siena on behalf of Henry II, and papal legate to France on the eve of the Wars of Religion, this book argues that Ippolito’s apparent diplomatic access ultimately weakened his family’s position in Italy and left it ill-equipped to compete in the changing politics of the peninsula.

Born in 1090, Bernard of Clairvaux died sixty-three years later, and was canonized in 1174. His friends and brothers began writing his official life even before he died, so convinced were they of his personal holiness and his importance to the Church of his day. St Swithun was an obscure ninth-century bishop of Winchester about whom little was, and is, known. But following the translation of his relics from a conspicuous tomb into the Old Minster, Winchester, on 15 July 971, the massive rebuilding of the cathedral, and a vigorous publicity campaign byBishop Aethelwold (963-84), St Swithun became one of the most popular and important English saints, whose cult was widespread not only in England but also in Ireland, Scandinavia, and France. Furono oltre 2000 i bambini d’origine subsahariana che nel corso del 1800 vennero riscattati dalla schiavitù ed educati in Europa da parte di missionari cattolici, con lo scopo di rimandarli in Africa come «missionari indigeni». Eppure, fino ad oggi questo fenomeno non ha quasi trovato posto nella storiografia e nella memoria collettiva. Dimenticato, forse, o rimosso. Vittime di scelte altrui, ma anche protagonisti delle proprie, i cosiddetti «moretti» non furono semplici satelliti orbitanti intorno ai missionari europei, ma veri e propri «agenti della storia». Questo libro è un primo tentativo di sottrarli alle periferie delle nostre narrazioni e di restituire loro un posto e un nome. Gli archivi parlano chiaro: gli afro-europei non sono protagonisti solo della storia europea più recente.
