Christdemokratische und konservative Parteien spielten in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine immer wichtigere integrationspolitische Rolle. Es gab neue Anreize und Herausforderungen für transnationale Kontakte und organisierte Parteienkooperation. Nach dem „Genfer Kreis“ und den „Nouvelles Equipes Internationales“ (NEI) konstituierte sich die „Europäische Union Christlicher Demokraten“ (EUCD) 1965. Es folgten die Europäische Volkspartei (EVP) 1976 und die European Democrat Union (EDU) 1978. Diese Parteienzusammenschlüsse führten zur Abstimmung in politischen und ideologischen Fragen sowie zu gemeinsamem Vorgehen auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene. Dabei ging es um Fragen der Europa- und Integrationspolitik, aber der Internationalisierung und Globalisierung. Diese mehrsprachige, auf deutschen, englischen, französischen und italienischen Dokumenten basierende Quellenedition verdeutlicht die Rolle der christdemokratischen und konservativen Parteien Europas. Sie agierten als kommunikative Mittler zwischen Staat und Gesellschaft, insbesondere hinsichtlich grenzüberschreitender Entwicklungen im Sinne der Debatte über ein gemeinsames und integriertes Europa. Der Band knüpft an die Edition „Transnationale Parteienkooperation der europäischen Christdemokraten“ an, in der Dokumente der Jahre 1945-1965 ediert worden sind (K. G. Saur Verlag, 2004, ISBN 3-598-11655-1).

Was meint konservativ? Diese Frage trieb Intellektuelle, Politiker und Parteien nach 1945 in Großbritannien wie der Bundesrepublik Deutschland um. Während der Begriff in Großbritannien ein akzeptierter Bestandteil des politischen Vokabulars war, gehörte er in der Bundesrepublik zu den schwierigen Begriffen der jungen Demokratie, beladen mit antidemokratischem Ballast. Von den Debatten um das Konservative besonders betroffen waren jene Parteien, die sich (auch) als konservativ etikettierten: die Conservative Party und die CDU/CSU. Als in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren die Konservativen ihre sprachliche Deutungshoheit an die Linke verloren glaubten, wurden die politischen Sprachen des Konservativen neu formuliert. In Großbritannien konzentrierte sich die Debatte auf die Conservative Party und führte zu erbitterten Flügelkämpfen, aus denen die Thatcherites als Gewinner hervorgingen. In der Bundesrepublik dagegen kristallisierten sich in einem verzweigten intellektuellen Diskurs eine liberale und eine neurechte Variante des Begriffs heraus. Für die Unionsparteien wurde dies zu einer fulminanten Herausforderung. Zugleich wurde der Bedeutungskampf um das Konservative auf europäischer Ebene ausgetragen. Diese nationalen wie transnationalen Auseinandersetzungen um die Begriffe hatten weitreichende politische Folgen – bis heute.

How relevant and vital are political parties in contemporary democracies? Do they fulfill the functions that any stable and effective democracy might expect of them, or are they little more than moribund anachronisms, relics of a past age of political life, now superseded by other mechanisms of linkage between state and society? These are the central questions which this book aims to address through a rigorous comparative analysis of political parties operating in the world'sadvanced industrial democracies. Drawing on the expertise of an impressive team of internationally known specialists, the book engages systematically with the evidence to show that, while a degree of popular cynicism towards them is often chronic, though rarely acute, parties have adapted and survived asorganizations, remodelling themselves to the needs of an era in which patterns of linkage and communication with social groups have been transformed. This has enabled them to remain central to democratic systems, especially in respect of the political functions of governance, recruitment and, albeit more problematically, interest aggregation. On the other hand, the challenges they face in respect of interest articulation, communication and participation have pushed parties into more marginalroles within Western political systems. The implications of these findings for democracy depend on the observer's normative and theoretical perspectives. “The West” is a central idea in German public discourse, yet historians know surprisingly little about the evolution of the concept. Contrary to common assumptions, this volume argues that the German concept of the West was not born in the twentieth century, but can be traced from a much earlier time. In the nineteenth century, “the West” became associated with notions of progress, liberty, civilization, and modernity. It signified the future through the opposition to antonyms such as “Russia” and “the East,” and was deployed as a tool for forging German identities.
