This report summarizes the analysis of transverse cracking in asphalt pavement by a five state study team from Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. The study was initiated under the sponsorship of the Federal Highway Administration and four evaluation conferences were held during the course of the study. Each state conducted a crack inventory on their asphalt pavement. An effort was made to correlate this inventory with numerous factors that were considered to be pertinent to the cracking problem. One state did indicate that there was a correlation between transverse cracking severity and the subsurface geology. The other states were unable to identify any significant factors as being the primary contributors. The analysis of the problem was divided into, (1) mix design, (2) maintenance, and (3) 3R rehabilitation. Many potential factors to be considered were identified under each of these three study divisions.

Transverse cracking of bituminous pavements is a form of pavement distress which induces losses in pavement peformance and reduction in pavement service life. To alleviate the problem, more information is needed about the mechanism of transverse pavement cracking and the low temperature properties of highway construction materials. The Ste. Anne Test Road was constructed in Manitoba in 1967 and was designed for the study of transverse pavement cracking. Twenty-nine test sections were constructed incorporating a number of different materials and pavement structures, judged to be potentially important in the study of transverse cracking... A study of the mechanics of the fracture phenomenon indicated that most of the transverse cracking initiated during a prolonged low temperature cycle which has an average recurrence interval in southern Manitoba between five and ten years. Based on observations, crack detection instrumentation data and an x-ray study, transverse cracking was judged to initiate at the pavement surface. Transverse cracking of asphalt pavements is a costly pavement distress occurring in states that experience cold/freezing temperatures during the winter months. The cracks are caused by low temperature-induced tensile stresses that exceed the tensile strength of the pavement material. The majority of these cracks occur in the transverse direction relative to the pavement and with regular frequency along the roadway. The major objectives of this research included: (1) Determine the nature and extent of transverse cracking in asphalt pavements in Oklahoma; (2) Conduct a field and laboratory investigation of pavement materials and highway features to determine and evaluate the various factors that influence transverse cracking; and (3) Review ODOT practices for dealing with transverse cracking of asphalt pavements.
