These Trapping Guidelines for Fruit Flies of Economic Importance provide strategic guidance and direction on where and how to implement surveys in support of fruit fly control and quarantine activities. This document is the summation of recommendations put forth by a multi-national group of fruit fly workers that has the objective of providing objective information on fruit fly survey tools to NPPOs and industry in FAO and IAEA Member States. These Trapping Guidelines are to be considered as a ‘working’ document to be regularly updated as survey techniques continue to improve and experience in fruit fly control programmes evolves.

The book focuses on four broad topics related to trapping of agriculturally important tephritid fruit flies, namely i) lures and traps, ii) invasion biology and detection of infestations, iii) attract and kill systems, and iv) trade regulations and risk assessment. This comprehensive structure progresses from the biological interaction between insect and lures/traps to the area-wide use of trapping systems to the utilization and impact of trapping data on international trade. The chapters include accounts of earlier research but are not simply compendia and instead evaluate past and current work as a tool for critical analysis and proposal of productive avenues for future work. At present there is no book available that deals with fruit fly trapping in such a broad context. Our book fills this gap and serves as a global reference for both those interested in fruit flies specifically as well as anyone dealing with the threat of invasive agricultural insects in general.

This guideline describes the most widely used classic and modern phytosanitary procedures for the management of fruit flies that infest fruits and vegetables and that are of quarantine and economic importance, specifically species of the genera Anastrepha, Bactrocera, Ceratitis, Dacus, Rhagoletis and Zeugodacus. Pest management can be aimed at the native species of fruit flies or to prevent the introduction, establishment and spread of non-native species. This document is the first comprehensive guideline developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the united Nations (FAO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for area-wide fruit fly pest management including area-wide suppression, containment, eradication, and exclusion strategies. It is a much-needed complement to the already published FAO/IAEA guidelines for fruit fly survey “Trapping Guidelines for Area-wide Fruit Fly Programmes” and “Fruit Sampling Guidelines for Area-Wide Fruit Fly Programmes”.

Population survey is a basic component of any area-wide integrated pest management programme. Pest surveillance measures have to be practical, cost-effective and provide reliable information to action programme managers. Fruit fly trapping provides useful information on the presence or absence of the pest, and on its relative spatial distribution and abundance. However, performance and thus effectiveness of trapping systems can be affected by extrinsic factors including changing environmental and ecological conditions. Under certain conditions, fruit sampling becomes a suitable tool for population sampling. For example, at the beginning or end of the fruiting season when fewer mature fruits are still available on the trees, larvae could be more easily detected. Fruit sampling also becomes an important pest detection tool in areas where sterile flies are being continuously released and where low-density trapping is kept to avoid high sterile fly recapture rate and where traps are aimed basically at monitoring the released sterile flies.

Fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) pests have a profound impact on horticultural production and economy of many countries. It is fundamental to understand their biology and evaluate methods for their suppression, containment, or eradication. Area-Wide Management of Fruit Fly Pests comprises contributions from scientists from around the world on several species of tephritids working on diverse subjects with a focus on area-wide management of these pests. The first three sections of the book explore aspects of the biology, ecology, physiology, behavior, taxonomy, and morphology of fruit flies. The next two sections provide evidence on the efficacy of attractants, risk assessment, quarantine, and post-harvest control methods. The fifth and sixth sections examine biological control methods such as the Sterile Insect Technique and the use of natural enemies of fruit flies. The seventh section focuses on area-wide integrated pest management and action programs. Finally, the eighth section examines social, economic, and policy issues of action programs aimed at involving the wider community in the control of these pests and facilitate the development of control programs. Features: Presents information on the biology of tephritid flies. Provides knowledge on the use of natural enemies of fruit flies for their biological control. Includes research results on models and diets used for the Sterile Insect Technique. Reports developments on the chemical ecology of fruit flies that contribute to make control methods more specific and efficient. Reviews subjects such as Holistic Pest Management and Area-Wide Management Programs including social, economic, and policy issues in various countries. Biology And Management Of Bactrocera And Related Fruit Flies written by Anthony R Clarke and has been published by CABI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-12 with Nature categories.

Throughout Asia, Australia and the Pacific, and increasingly in Africa, the primary horticultural insect pests are fruit flies belonging to the genera Bactrocera, Zeugodacus and Dacus (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacini). The Dacini is a hugely diverse clade of nearly 900 species endemic to the rainforests of Asia, Australia and the western Pacific, and the savannas and woodlands of Africa. All these species lay their eggs into fleshy fruits and vegetables, where the maggots feed, therefore destroying the fruit. In addition to being crop pests, dacines are also invasive pests of major quarantine importance and their presence in production areas can significantly impact market access opportunities. This broad text provides a rapid introduction to this economically and ecologically important group, which includes species such as the Oriental fruit fly (B. dorsalis), Melon fly (Z. cucurbitae), Queensland fruit fly (B. tryoni) and the Olive fly (B. oleae). Broken into three primary sections, it first explores the evolutionary history, systematic relationships, taxonomy and species-level diagnosis of the Dacini flies. The following biology section covers their life history, population demography, behaviour and ecology, and natural enemies. The final section of the book covers the management of these flies, with chapters on pre-harvest, post-harvest and regulatory controls. Each chapter concludes with a list of key monographs, papers or book chapters for further reading. This book will be of interest to field entomologists, extension officers, quarantine officers and market access negotiators, as well as students of applied entomology and pest management.

The purpose of the Guide is to support national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) who wish to establish and maintain pest free areas (PFA) including places and/or production sites (PFPP and PFPS) as well as areas of low pest prevalence (ALPP). To facilitate an understanding of the processes to establish and maintain PFAs and ALPPs, a diagram in the form of a decision tree was constructed that identifies and outlines five general phases of programme development as follows: initiation, feasibility, establishment, maintenance, and market access phases. The guide is then divided into corresponding sections that describe what the key elements of each phase are, why these elements are important, what some of the common challenges and pitfalls are, and factors that may influence the success of the different phases such as budget stability, public outreach, availability of good survey and control tools, and open engagement with stakeholders and trading partners. By providing a deeper understanding of the factors that should be considered when establishing a PFA, PFPP, PFPS or ALPP the guide aims to overcome the challenges and maximize the impact of these efforts to the benefit of all parties. The guide concludes by providing a number of case studies from around the world that highlight successful PFA and ALPP programmes and how they deal with particular key issues. This guide contains current experience and the most advanced phytosanitary procedures in the implementation of PFA and ALPP, however, it is subjected to revision and updates as new developments are made available.
