Este libro se centra en la «sequela Jesu», en el seguimiento de Jesús, tal como se dio en los inicios del cristianismo. Objeto de estudio son únicamente Jesús y sus discípulos en la tierra santa, así como las comunidades primitivas, que testimonian los Evangelios. Más bien se trata de algo que constituye su entraña misma por voluntad de Jesús, siguiendo los designios del Padre a impulsos del Espíritu. El cristianismo subsiste en la medida que cuenta con personas que optan por Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, y lo siguen en un acontecimiento de amor. Sin ese seguimiento la Iglesia no podría perpetuarse en el tiempo, ni llevar a cabo la misión encomendada de anunciar la buena noticia «en Espíritu y verdad».
