Este Tratado de climatología abarca el conjunto de la materia: luego de una introducción histórica equilibrada y suficiente, incluye climatología analítica, balance energético planetario, el torbellino absoluto y sus leyes, modelos de circulación atmosférica general, zonas climáticas, circulación general del oeste, revisión de la teoría frontológica noruega, distintas depresiones extratropicales, altas presiones subtropicales, ámbito intertropical, ciclones, otras perturbaciones tropicales, ransiciones tropical y extratropical; espacios afectados por gigantescas inversiones de la circulación atmosférica, estacionales en las áreas monzónicas; o, con mecanismos, frecuencia de aparición y alcance territorial (teleconexiones) por determinar, los episodios de ENSO; otros patrones de variabilidad de baja frecuencia, clasificaciones climáticas, climatología regional universal y de España; y cierran la publicación dos amplios capítulos sobre repercusiones atmosféricas de la actividad humana y riesgos climáticos, respectivamente, con especial atención a la explicación de los efectos de la hipótesis actual de cambio climático por efecto invernadero de causa antrópica en el mundo y España. Con objeto que el libro resulte útil a la gran mayoría de interesados en cuestiones climáticas y ambientales, se ha encuadrado el texto en una estructura que conjuga, armónicamente, autonomía y cohesión de las distintas partes, facilitando así la consulta de cualquiera de ellas. A esta finalidad obedecen también máxima claridad expositiva, sin mengua de rigor y precisión conceptual, y, para favorecer la comprensión, una insólita riqueza de ilustraciones. Over this last decade, the concept of Social Metabolism has gained prestige as a theoretical instrument for the required analysis, to such an extent that there are now dozens of researchers, hundreds of articles and several books that have adopted and use this concept. However, there is a great deal of variety in terms of definitions and interpretations, as well as different methodologies around this concept, which prevents the consolidation of a unified field of new knowledge. The fundamental aim of the book is to conduct a review of the past and present usage of the concept of social metabolism, its origins and history, as well as the main currents or schools that exist around this concept. At the same time, the reviews and discussions included are used by the authors as starting points to draw conclusions and propose a theory of socio-ecological transformations. The theoretical and methodological innovations of this book include a distinction of two types of metabolic processes: tangible and intangible; the analysis of the social metabolism at different scales (in space and time) and a theory of socio-ecological change overcoming the merely “systemic” or “cybernetic” nature of conventional approaches, giving special protagonism to collective action.

From floods and droughts to tsunamis and hurricanes, recent years have seen a distressing and often devastating increase in extreme climatic events. While it is possible to study these disasters from a purely scientific perspective, a growing preponderance of evidence suggests that changes in the environment are related to both a shift in global economic relations and these weather-related disasters. In Weathering Risk in Rural Mexico, Hallie Eakin draws on ethnographic data collected in three agricultural communities in rural Mexico to show how economic and climatic change not only are linked in cause and effect at the planetary scale but also interact in unpredictable and complex ways in the context of regional political and trade relationships, national economic and social programs, and the decision-making of institutions, enterprises, and individuals. She shows how the parallel processes of globalization and climatic change result in populations that are “doubly exposed” and thus particularly vulnerable. Chapters trace the effects of El Niño in central Mexico in the late 1990s alongside some of the principal changes in the country’s agricultural policy. Eakin argues that in order to develop policies that effectively address rural poverty and agricultural development, we need an improved understanding of how households cope simultaneously with various sources of uncertainty and adjust their livelihoods to accommodate evolving environmental, political, and economic realities.
